Remembering Dier's expeditionary tackle on Ramos, hopefully with his experience he can play the aggressor of the two centre backs as Romero has been, and one of Phillips and Dorrington has the pace to play the recovery role which VDV has been - a simpler, more reactive job for their lesser experience.

Maybe we can still field a backline which isn't fatally flawed.

Phillips and Dorrington have been mentioned a few times on here now but they werent even in the match squad yesterday.

Presumably dier or emerson take it on and if they really cant handle it maybe then we turn to others but i expect they get a decent run at it first.

We need two replacement CBs in the immediate term though, and Davies is still injured. Phillips has been in squads.

I wasn't really predicting who will play just hypothesizing how we could play a viable high line which includes Dier, who will inevitably be in it. Do Hojbjerg or Royal have the pace to reel in someone played through behind them? Maybe Royal.

Call me crazy but if VDV is out for a few weeks I have no issue with Royal deputising as our best backup option. He has always been better at defending than going forward and a CB role suits him IMO. We may still lose to the likes of City but he’s our best bet against everyone else.

Definitely Dier. Also think we’ll see PEH used as a centre back before the kids.

To be fair, Dier, Royal and PEH all did ok at CB. Obviously not as good as Cuti and Micky but better than I thought they would.
