Good point about the nuance between 3-4-3 vs 3-5-2 and the slight lesser reliance on goal output from wingbacks in the 3-4-3.

Still ofc a very important position but as you say there has to be a compromise somewhere for HG quota and for budget and with Spence’s pace and power I can see conte thinking he can work with that and Doherty and by strengthening the other areas significantly we will be stronger as a whole.

I played a good standard of football (paid level) in a 3atb formation as a wing back, I was decent say 7/10 for that level and got goals and assists but we had 3x 9/10 CB’s who were formidable and very good on the ball and that solid base is probably more important than having say 2x 7/10 CB’s and a 9/10 wing back, because said wingback might score a few more goals and assists but if you have a weakness in the back 3 you’ll get exposed all day long and if those CB’s aren’t as good ball players that also very much effects your overall teams play as those balls into feet and long diagonal switches of play are vital in a 3atb formation.

Thanks for the insights today trix, good to keep drilling it home to people that it is all a fluid puzzle and that some compromise and flex is needed for parts of the puzzle ?.

As long as Conte is happy with our overall approach to the whole puzzle then I’m happy abs I’m sure we’ll end up with a very strong well rounded squad.

At a guess I wonder if the situation is something like E.g.
Choice A:
Spence RWB
Bastoni/gravidol CB
cheaper non HG than Maddison/JWP CM/AM

vs
Choice B:
Di Lorenzo RWB
Bremer/P.Torres CB
Maddison/JWP CM/AM

just examples but these are likely the type of juggling acts Conte & Paratici will be working through which is why Spence is an important step in the overall puzzle being HG and relatively cheap if we can agree a price we want.

I'm guessing the expensive LCB option is off the table (in fact all 4 CBs listed) at this point but based on what you've got there I'd take option A over option B. I could see Daichi Kamada as the cheap non-HG 10.

Give me Molina from Udinese over Di Lorenzo and I'd be more interested in option B however.

Give me Hakimi as RWB and either of Gvardiol or Bastoni as LCB, and you´d could fill up the HG-quota with any dross from the local pub as far as I´m concerned

None of those mentioned players are availavle this summer. Of course they would be nice but for the LCB options, I'm guessing we are looking at next summer.

Is KWP better than Emerson though? We need someone more attacking Shirley
I think he'd defo be better going forward than Royal. Has better technique, passing and calmer under pressure. Better crosser too.

He'd still struggle against his marker 1v1 though and can't see him ever bursting past a full back with pace or a trick. I think he'd suit a possession-based team more than a Conte-team personally.

I guess that next you´re telling me that Gal Gadot wouldn´t be interested in dating an overweight, divorced Spurs fan in his late 40s?

Facts. Hate them. Always ruining my dreams.

If we can’t get Spence what about Lamptey. More expensive but would be our 1st choice RWB and is HG ?but would mean less budget for 2nd CB and creative AM player so not sure conte would go down this route unfortunately

I think even if he'd had a good season at Brighton his frame would put off Conte. No way is he bringing in a 5'4" wing back.

Yea good point mate, probably why he’s looking more at a Spence type big powerful frame, fair.
Yeah think Conte prefers bigger players. Perisic, Spence, Lenglet, and Bissouma all around 6 foot or above, as were Bentancur and Kulusevski.

At Inter he went for some smaller guys at wingback and attacking midfield (Eriksen, Young, Sanchez, etc) but after his comments on Bryan Gil I think he wants bigger guys for the Prem.
