I think Levy takes most of the blame here. We should be analysing player contracts and renewing them more frequently.
In my opinion this stems from the 2016/2017 season, when this team was at its best. They were all on low wages, the media wouldn’t shut up about it. But it felt at the time that we were holding out until we got to the new stadium, to start offering the big wages. We should have bitten the bullet then and signed him up long term at that point. Before the media started with the whole wage thing.
At that point, if he didn’t sign on them terms, we could have shifted him, Levy would have got stick no doubt, Poch would have been shown what happens to players that don’t sign and properly commit to your club, we would be £40/£50m up and invested some of it into another player.
Of course you could argue that we have had our worth out of the player, that he cost us peanuts in the grand scheme of things, and probably helped bring in much higher revenue than he’s transfer would have. But there needs to be a cut off, I think the cut off should be 2.5 years, it allows much better planning, you see the players commitment etc. Especially now transfers are getting higher. You need to protect the clubs assets.
