This trope is so fucking boring. When have the club ever come out and said this?
Agreed. The only instance I remember is Moutinho, where we definitely put out a statement, I guess because AVB was super unhappy.

If we want Brennan, I think we'll get him. I'm not convinced, but I'm usually wrong about this sort of thing.

Everyone seems to be on it now.

If Forrest are trying raise funds to cover FFP then I’m not sure why they would agree to a partial trade. Ether way I’d be surprised if we spent £50-55 mil on him. Then again I don’t think anyone else spends that on him ether. Understandable why this might not happen until the last day or two.

Someone mentioned that they’d be able to amortise new players over several years, and show 100% profit on Johnson as he is club trained.

Not just this, but does it ever actually play out positively? If anything I feel like being linked intensely to a player and failing to get them actually generates more negative attitudes towards people in charge of the transfers.

What I don't understand is if it is such a tough deal to do why are we only entering negotiations now.
My reading of some of the ITK info is that we're not just entering into negotiations now.and its been going on for a little while.

Brentford are making a late push for Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson after submitting a club record £40 million offer.

Johnson is set to move this week, with Tottenham Hotspur also in talks to sign the Wales international, but Brentford have ramped up their long-standing interest with a third bid of this transfer window.

Brentford’s pursuit of the 22-year-old stretches back almost two years, with the club having at least three offers rejected when Forest were operating in the Championship.

Bids of £30 million and £35 million this summer were both turned down, but the west London club have now returned with an improved offer which is edging closer to Forest’s valuation.

Brentford are preparing for a future without their talismanic striker Ivan Toney, who has now switched agents, and regard Johnson as a priority signing in Thomas Frank’s plans.

Tottenham are still considered favourites to sign Johnson, with club chairman Daniel Levy now in talks with Forest to try to conclude a deal.

Fab just retweeted this, wonder if he's hinting that Chelsea is going to get involved....

I’d honestly not read much into the retweet tbh. Fab knows he’s one of the names doing the rounds at the moment and will be hoping the tweet gets some more views etc by retweeting it. Not that Chelsea won’t get involved because you never know with them but i kind of get the feeling they don’t like him enough to pay £50 mil. Also there have been reports he’d prefer a move to us anyway.

If Forest are trying to cover a FFP hole then a player trade could really help: the clubs put a high notional value on the player moving to Forest and the book profit on the sale of Johnson is increased.

Mind you, it was over doing this trick that caused Paratici all his problems.

What ? A club spending money to replace their striker before the player actually leaves ?
