I guess that depends on your definition of "major" so here are the facts (Prem only top 6 finishes) to help people form their opinion;

14/15 9 starts + 5 subs
15/16 14 starts + 3 subs
16/17 18 starts + 5 subs
17/18 26 starts + 3 subs
18/19 20 starts + 7 subs
19/20 16 starts + 2 subs
21/22 28 starts + 1 sub

7 seasons - started less than half the games in 4 out of 7 and played less than half in 3 of them.
Lol after looking at those numbers, I would absolutely adore to hear your definition of "major", and how 23 appearances (or less than half, as you said) does not fit your definition of "major".

He did a great job as cover and then had a spell out the team so was rusty again. It happens. He's still a good squad player so not an issue if he stays next season. If we sign a left back and a left centre back he can go. If not there's no problem to have him another year.

I’ve mentioned before he is doing his coaching badges is ultra professional, intelligent and very experienced domestically and on the international stage. Why would we sell when he could transition to our coaching staff at the end of next season.

He's only 31 and looks after himself. He doesn't rely on pace either. I think he'll play for another 5 years years yet.

Think we may look to sign someone like Calafiori (probably a difficult one tbh with Juve interested) or say Lloyd Kelly (don't know if his injury record maybe of concern) who can cover both LCB and LB. Add a right back who fits the style and can cover/rotate with Porro and move on Davies and Royal and think we are probably covered at the back with options of:

LB - Udogie/Calafiori
LCB - VDV/Calafiori
RCB - Romero/Dragusin
RB - Porro/New RB

The full back role is very different though. I think we need someone permanent for that position so they can grow into the inverted role. With Europe we probably need 2 for each position.

The word 'majority' is a derivative of the word major - so I would say if you play less then half the games that is not major. Others can apply their own definition.

For me the numbers you posted prove he has, at the very least, been an important member of the squad since he’s signed pretty much.

We can argue the toss about 18 league starts and 5 subs being major or not but you can’t say that’s not significant or important. Then you have the 3 seasons he’s put in 20 plus league starts which is major in anyone’s book.

Yes like I posted it is down to our personal definitions. The origianl poster said 'major'. 9 starts and 14 starts = major??? I personally would say no - others would say yes.

PEH has 7 starts this season is that 'a major part'?

I've thought for a while if I was in charge of squad building, I would let Davies play out his last year as our 4th CB because I thought he was pretty good there (and I'm not convinced he's a fullback anymore given how that role has changed for us). That would let us loan out Phillips, Dorrington, and Vuscovic and reassess where we are in a year rather than locking us into a 4-5 year deal for someone like Lewis or Adarabioyo, both of whom I'm not convinced of as long-term contributors.

However, I get this feeling that Ange really wants to break with the previous leadership group, hence him not being too fussed about Kane leaving and ushering out Lloris and Dier, and trying to move on Hojberg. I think Davies also fits into that group (as does Son, but I think he maybe is thought of differently), so I just wonder if we'll be looking to move Davies even though my personal opinion would be to keep him one more year.

He's still only 31 and could realistically play for another 3-4 years at another club and then look to focus on coaching at the point of retirement. Depends on what he wants but I imagine he feels he can still contribute on a weekly basis for another team.
