Reminder that Dembele is in the French national squad so Hugo would be a good resource to know about the player for Conte/Spurs to lean on.

I think this deal is all upside. If we get a striker in the Summer (huge if obviously at Spurs) he would be one of 6 options for the front three so his injuries would be more manageable considering we would have Son, Lucas & Kulusevski to rotate in those wide positions.

Massive, massive talent.

He’s got 6 months left on his contract, no chance of a loan

It's not impossible to make a short term loan happen, depends on how desperate Barca are to get rid. Josh King went on loan from Bournemouth to Everton last season in Janaury even when he had 6 months remaining on his contract.

This may be a special case.
  • WC year. Player told he will benched so he has incentive to play now rather than wait it out Playing now on a loan allows him to still go on a free in the summer.
  • Barcelona want him out and would likely subsidize wages to get him off the books rather than have him sit in the stands
  • Plenty of teams need help for CL push or league championship. If the numbers work, it's pretty much a win all the way around iff he is motivated to give his all.

They recently told him that he has to leave in this transfer window. They're definitely pushing him out.
There's also the wages issue. Spain have this weird 4-1 rule for teams in breach of FFP where they have to lose £400k off the payroll to hire someone on £100k.

My initial reaction was "no way we should do this" as I was looking forward to starting February with fewer red flags associated with the team. Maybe some of the attitude issues are just Barca and spanish media overhyping things, but the injury record is still a huge red flag. Thinking about it more and reading posts about him, I'm now I'm more in the "let's roll the dice" camp. Numbers that have been quoted in this thread are pretty cheap compared to his talent level, and he'd be one of our best players on paper.

Still, I can't help worrying we'll see a summer 2024 ITK post along the lines of "we're all set to sign [Good Player X] but we need to get Dembele's wages off our books and free up a squad space. Having a hard time finding a buyer with his wages and the injuries he's had with us but we're trying." But it would be a real coup if it worked out.

The loan fee would essential be the transfer fee in that case.
I mean there's benefits/drawbacks to both scenarios. If it's a buy you can tie them down for years, if it's a loan you can dump him after 6 months if he's unsuccessful, but he could do the same to you if he is.

I'm 45 and probably have hamstrings in better condition. It's just his injury record I don't like.

I can see a deal where we split the salary in our favor. It would end up being a 6 month trial, which depending on Dembele's frame of mind, could work out for both parties. Chance for him to play consistently and make the WC squad and potentially get a long term contract out from us or another club in the summer.

Give him 100k a week basic

But if we reach the CL he gets a £5m bonus

Which means he's on 200k if we reach the CL

I don't see how this signing works, awful attitude, awful injury record, poor form. I would rather keep Ndombele

Incidentally, when it comes to attitude, does this relate to his application in training and on match days?

In July 2021, Dembélé was embroiled in a racism controversy, when video footage of Dembélé along with fellow teammate Antoine Griezmanncirculated online, whereby he was seen making derogatory racial comments against the Asian technicians in their hotel room.[60] As the technicians appeared to be troubleshooting the room's television, Dembélé made comments towards Griezmann in French, stating "All these ugly faces, just so you can play PES, aren't you ashamed?", continuing with "What the fuckin language?" before zooming in while laughing on one of the technicians faces, mentioning "Are you technologically advanced in your country or not?".[61][62][63][64]

He can get Fucked.

If he can stay healthy I think he would work very well. His physicality suits the premier league quite well. I think he’s worth the gamble.

Spending 15-18 mill on Dembele is significantly less of a risk then 60 mill on Diaz. Even if you get the Rennes level Dembele, you've done well. But if we luck out and get the Dortmund level Dembele, he's off to psg for 70 mill and he's their problem.
