I don't think the numbers were assigned to a particular player at that point in time... a few players could have worn the #5 shirt in the 86/87 season. If you were trying to find who wore it for a specific match, maybe see if you can find match day notes online or perhaps pick up the match programme on Ebay?

(Played Coventry and/or QPR away)
Cheers

If you were talking about Coventry away in the 86/87 season... we wore their away shirt because of kit clash:pompous:

Mitchell Thomas wore 5 in the 87 Final, according to wiki. I'm thinking Gough.

Just had a quick look on Getty Images and there are a few pics of Gough wearing the #5 shirt in the 86/87 season. Think the number related more to the position in those days, so if Gough gets injured, Thomas comes in for him and takes the number.

Would have been Gough for most of the season.

Old squad numbers were:

  • 1 Goalkeeper
  • 2 Right back
  • 3 Left back
  • 4 Central midfielder (more defensive)
  • 5 Centre back
  • 6 Centre back
  • 7 Right winger
  • 8 Central midfielder (more attacking)
  • 9 Centre forward (usually a target player)
  • 10 Striker (usually a fast poacher)
  • 11 Left winger

I know what you are getting at in terms of numbers and traditional 4-4-2 formation. But not quite right for us in that decade period. For example:

Garth Crooks (fast poacher striker) wore 11 in the early 80's.
Hoddle (playmaker) was our 10.
Didn't Steve Hodge wear 4 (left midfield in 1986/87 season)?
Ardiles wore 11 (CM).

As an aside, I thnk that if Gough had stayed for more than 1 year then we may have gone on to win the league.
dont get me started.....that team played together for no more than a year at which point we sold the crown jewels (Hoddle, Gough and Allen). Someone else will remember the details but those were the days when we specialized in self-flagellation! And in fact, if wed won our games in hand (due to cup run) wed have won the league that year IIRC!

Pretty sure Crooks wore 10, Archibald 8, Hoddle 4, Ardiles 7, Galvin 9, Perryman 6, Hughton 2, Roberts 5, Villa 11, Miller 3

Peter Taylor wore 11, Ian Moores wore 8 and Chris Jones 9. Barry Daines, Mark Kendall and Milija Aleksic all wore no1 and Hoddle wore 4 for a while. Terry Naylor often wore 2, Keith Osgood wore 5, John Pratt often wore 7 and Noel Brotherston was lucky if he got a game.

Our shirt numbering was all-over-the place at times in the 1980s, I even remember Tony Galvin wearing no.3 whilst playing on the wing at one point (three decades before Gareth Bale was doing it!).

In fact, aside from Aleksic in goal, the whole of the 81 Cup Team wore the wrong shirt numbers in the more 'traditional' sense:

2 Hughton played Left Back
3 Miller (CB)
4 Roberts (CB)
5 Villa (MF)
6 Perryman (RB)
7 Ardiles (MF)
8 Archibald (ST)
9 Galvin (Winger)
10 Hoddle (MF)
11 Crooks (ST)

Don't think Hoddle would have been too happy with Crooks wearing 10!

Crooks was mainly 11. Archibald was mainly 8. Our 2 CFs (so not 9 and 10). Villa wore 5 I recall.

I guess they swapped about a lot though as their were no set numbers.

Perryman wore 5 and Villa 6 in the 81 Cup final first game. They went swapped back to the correct numbers for the replay.

thanks guys - you're knowledge is incredible.

i was looking at a long sleeve third shirt with number 5 on the back, from the 1986-87 season and the seller mentions Coventry or QPR away.

Im sure the same top was used as a second away shirt the following year 1987-1988.

Seeing as the number was for a position back then rather than a player, i dont suppose i will know who wore it for sure.

I only got to a couple of home games then as i was young.

It's the dark navy Hummel kit right? If so then you are right, it was used as a 3rd shirt in 86/87 (the first official 3rd shirt we ever had) then as the away shirt for 87/88.

D'you have any pics of the shirt Mick? As an avid (somewhat slightly obsessed) collector I'd be very interested to see them.
