Believe me, I wasn't too old then either! If anyone lived through the George Best years then I can only compare the veneration felt for both he and Garrincha. Di Stefano was definitely prior to my awakening!
Best was my favourite player at the time, more so than even Jimmy Greaves. He's stiil the most naturally-gifted player I've ever seen play in the English league. Maradona's the most gifted player ever in my lifetime, including Pele, and would always be first on my teamsheet.

I agree with your view of Best. Not sure who I’d drop out of my XI so I’ll name him super sub!

Garrincha is one player who rarely gets a mention, any chance you could give a youngster like me a bit more info on him as a player?
His brilliance was remarkable because he was born with deformed legs. He was a bit bow legged, and it was said that he could not stop a runaway dog in a corridor. I think Brazil didn't lose a game in which Pele & Garrincha played.

Not entirely answering the question but I think Garrincha is the greatest player of all time.
In a relative world, he invented new ways to play the game and could just destroy teams at will by dribbling through entire defences. Also, as far as I know, seemed to be the pioneering person for the ‘banana’ shot, or rather, hitting long range shots with deliberate swerve from dead ball and open play situations.

Pele gets all the credit but Brazil were undefeated with both in the side AND Garrincha went and won a World Cup on his own when Pele missed the tournament through injury.

He was born bow legged in a jungle community in Brazil and basically drank an entire bottle of Cachaca a day and still managed to be the best player in the world. A truly remarkable story.

There’s a great biography book about him for those that are interested.

Another player - I put Redondo as up there as one of the most complete CMs of all time and probably the most rounded DMs if you want to consider him that.

Great team. Beckenbauer, and Cruyff to some extent, are the clear outliers there in terms of generations. Love all the inclusions of Baresi in folks' lineups. He's the best natural defender bar none in my eyes. He'd be too short to be a top CB in the modern game of super athletes but think we have to make allowances for that kind of thing.

spot on re: baresi. remember watching him just in awe, never made a mistake and his size was never an issue as his reading of the game was off the scale, meaning he was always 2 steps ahead of his opponent. a right nasty fuck too :ROFLMAO:

See I had to put a ball winner in there as well. Essential for any successful team.

That early 90's Milan side had the best back line of any club side ever.

Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta, Tassotti, Rijkaard in front and Rossi behind them. They just didn't concede goals.

Canavarro(the best modern day CB imo) was close to making my team and he's fairly short for a CB.

only picking players from the 80s on as haven’t seen enough of the old timers:

southall

Thuram
Desailly
Baresi
Maldini

Rijkaard
Zidane

messi
Maradona
C Ronaldo

Van Basten

tried to pick a proper team not just the best attacking talents I’ve seen buts it’s hard.

First shout I’ve seen for Mattheus, which surprised me, a player i wish i’d seen as people say he was toe to toe with Gazza as the best midfielder in the world at one point. Must have been some player

Mattheus was a total destroyer, they didn't call him Der Panzer for nothing. Thing was he was equally as good with the ball as he was without it. He even excelled in his latter days as a sweeper, and his sheer longevity at the very top level is why he gets in my side. He was an 8/10 every game I ever saw him play and he made both Bayern and Germany tick. An armour plated Rolls Royce of a player
