What the hell are people doing - putting complaints through for no reason other than getting on their high horse. Like is impartiality really that big an issue that people take the time out of their lives to put a complaint through? Reminds me of that show where they went through letters of complaints about shows and what was said or shown in shows - forgot that show.

Great post. There's a distinct element of classism and elitism in Tory ministers' criticism of Lineker for showing dissent on his personal social media account.

Despite their hollow claims to be on the side of "ordinary working people", the Tories absolutely do not like working class folk getting ideas above their station. Such as disagreeing with the Tories.

Look at how they picked a massive and utterly needless fight with Marcus Rashford over children's fucking meals, for god's sake. One of the worst self-owns in recent political history - setting yourself up against a working class lad who just wanted to ensure kids get food.

Same with nurses, ambulance staff and doctors. It was fine for everyone to bang their pans for them every week in the pandemic. But the Tories showed their true contempt when the same key workers dared ask for pay rises to keep up with inflation.

Similar deal with Lineker. Like with Rashford, they see him as an ex-footballer who should stick to football stuff and leave the politics to those at the top.
I’m 100% with you, the Rashford thing always got under my skin because it shouldn’t be up to a footballer to shame the government to make sure kids eat over the school holidays.

Points of view. Basically either people saying ‘what a wonderful burst of sunshine’ or ‘I can’t believe this is allowed on the telly’ with nothing in between….

Great show - miss it.
It was funny, but not necessarily intentionally. The one i miss is question time even though it’s still on. It used to be genuinely interesting, now it’s been hijacked by dickheads on all sides

I've just seen Defoe has backed out of doing MOTD2 tomorrow so it looks like they've failed to contain it to just today's shows.

MOTD is a dinosaur. Plodding along in some 1950 format.

Think of the money we could save if we got rid of em all and the tired old bollocks that’s trotted out every week.

The millions saved could instantly give pensioners free licence fees back.

I agree with lineker by the way, but maybe he’s done us all a favour by falling on his own sword and taking shearer, Murphy etc with em.

The thing is with MOTD, there are people out there who dont have Sky/Virgin or any other access to PL football. Unless you mean a different set up?

Do you really think cancelling MOTD would enable free TV licences for the elderly or are you joking? Because that's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen spouted on here.

Personally I'm not fussed about MOTD... I haven't watched it in years, I get the goals off SSN's YouTube channel, and I have sky/BT sports. Gary Lineker also I'm ambivalent about.

This is about a state funded broadcaster being influenced by a government to shut down discussion challenging their policies. It's not just MOTD... it's Attenborough, QT, etc etc.

It's why I avoid any politics thread on here. It seems to make people lose any sense of civility and manners.
Rudeness, especially for no reason is one of those things that really gets my back up.

I long ago dropped out of everything in Discussion and Debate, haven’t got the time, energy or resilience these days.

Despite the fact that they’ve specifically signed contracts which mean they CAN’T express their opinions on political issues?

It’s the basis of the BBC’s existence.
No his contract doesn’t say that. And if it did, personal views of people who aren’t employed by the bbc shouldn’t be confused with bbc editorial stance if you have half a brain cell. And lastly, various right wing commentators have been oddly fine to give their views

I have to laugh - because I agree with your point.

When someone complained about tax dollars being spent on Lineker's salary, I thought that probably still less time and money wasted than all the staffers who have to run down all of these complaints.

I am reminded of a Super Bowl from long ago now - where for a millisecond, a pasty on Janet Jackson's boob was shown on live TV, and the amount of complaints it generated was insane.

ETA: As Timberlake reached his final line of "Rock Your Body" ("Gonna have you naked by the end of this song"), he pulled off a part of Jackson's costume; the move revealed Jackson's right breast—adorned by a sun-shaped nipple shield—for less than a second, after which the CBS broadcast immediately cut to a wide shot of the stage for a pyrotechnic effect, then to an aerial view of Reliant Stadium.

the FCC received nearly 540,000 complaints from Americans

They have to remain politically impartial - Lineker of course doesn’t as he isn’t an employee - and accusing the government of being Nazis doesn’t fit the criteria.
He didn’t accuse the government of being nazis though did he? Still why let the facts get in the way of fake outrage

Yes he did. You don't have to agree with the BBC impartiality guidelines or govt interference but when lineker writes "reminiscent of 1930's Germany" we all know very well what he meant - the blokes trying to steal the Arc of the Covenant not, say, modernist fucking architecture or something...
Sheesh
