Good job he'll be playing against Anelka, then...

Having said that, I'm struggling to think of an occasion when I saw an opposition winger tear Chimbo apart. I can remember Chimbo losing concentration and losing his man, but not a tricky player going past him time and time again. Indeed, given that Alan Hutton managed to accumulate around eleven yellow cards in half a season playing against dross Scottish wingers, I'd rather have Chimbo or YP Lee playing up against a quality winger...

i agree 100%.

Personally i cannot believe we wasted as much as 9 million on yet another player we don't need a scottish right back, do me a frigging favour. When i have seen nothing to convince me otherwise that Pascal Chimbonda remains one of the best in the Premiership, clearly our club likes to throw money away when they don't need to.

Quite simply Lee has to be LB in the cup final.

I know they don't have Robben anymore but last season in the cup he kept Robben so quiet that he was taken off, Moanio then switched the focus of their attack to the right side and they came back from 1-3 down to draw 3-3.

Carl, I hate to have to correct you, but in the cup game at the Bridge last year it was the much-maligned Stalteri who kept Robben quiet, with a little assistance from Ghaly.

I may, of course, have hallucinated this.

You're right and Robben wasn't taken off either according to the Telegraph so it must be me who is hallucinating

I do distinctly remember a match against us where he took Robben off because he was getting absolutely no joy against Lee, he then switched to the other wing for 5/10 minutes, was still getting nowhere and was taken off.

I can't think of an occasion where the much maligned Chimbo has been taken apart by a winger or anybody else.

He seems to take an awful lot of stick as well for his defending at set pieces but can anybody tell me the last time a player that Chimbonda was marking or indeed close to his area either scored or got in a free header at a set piece?

I'm very certain that barring injuries we will see Chimbo at LB in the final and in my opinion so we should especially if as expected Drogba & Anelka play as he is clearly our best option at LB to compete physically.

Hi LAL - I think Hutton's been a tremendous buy - he's played twice - looked quality twice - I'll say something ridiculous here - but it honestly wouldn't surprise me if he turns out to be our best right back since Alf Ramsey

And yet he makes less successful tackles per minute than our Korean LB

There is a lot more to defending than making tackles though.

I am really surprised by the amount of abuse Chimbonda gets on this forum, I think he has been a very good player for us.

Yep I agree!

There is closing down, tracking back, reading the game, supporting the attack, keeping possession, creating space for attacking players, marking, preventing crosses.

All things which Chimbonda isn't very good at, hell, the defensive ones he hardly bothers with at all unless he is playing CB (which admittedly he is good at). Really, really useless full-back I'm afraid.

From the little we have seen of Hutton he is 10 times the RB that Chimbonda is and I've done the Lee/Chimbonda comparison to death, Lee is simply better.

Agreed

Chimbo has been a great defender for us and (in my opinion) is better then Lee. He has also been playing LB of late and its obvious that Ramos prefers Chimbo to Lee.

Although I do agree that his attitude and workrate can be somewhat suspect sometimes although of late, it appears he is on it again and playing like we know Chimbo can. Probably Ramos's doing

There are plenty who will disagree with you.

I have no problem with Lee and defensively he is ok although as an attacking point he has very very little to his game. He may have been an attacking threat in Holland but the Premiership is very different.

In defensive terms I don't agree with your assesment of Chimbonda, he does occasionally switch off but hell all defenders do. But overall I think his defensive game is pretty sound, he's quick enough, strong enough, reads the game well, can tackle and for his size is exceptional in the air.

In his time at Spurs I can't recall seeing 1 wide player own him in a game. It should also be remembered that he can also be a threat going the other way, he has made and scored goals for us.

All in all I think that Chimbonda is a pretty good all round FB and to label him as a useless 1 is IMHO pretty ridiculous.

pointless discussion, they will both play in the final. If anything its lees last chance to claim the place at LB. Since hutton didnt cover himself in glory last time out (although looked good on his debut) he doesnt have another chance before the final.

It willo either be Chimbo RB Lee LB or Hutton RB Chimbo LB

On a further note, I wouldnt mind Chimbo staying post summer, perfect sub since he can play anywhere in defence, although this will be less vital next season with 7 subs - but will allow us to have 3 strikers on the bench! I wouldnt put that past ramos.

I'd agree. Chimbonda can be infuriating when he gets into Captain Casual mode, but some of the criticism goes way, way over the top. So does some of that of Lee—I've seen it claimed that he's weak, can't tackle and can't pass, and that he's rubbish because he never makes sliding tackles.

In this instance, assuming Grant does go with a 4-3-3, Lee is going to have problems with Anelka's height and physical power, and is going to be at a particular disadvantage in the air. It's also worth recalling that Martin favoured BAE against Bolton this season, presumably with that thought in mind. Much as I rate Lee, I would be astonished if Juande played anyone but Chimbo at LB at Wembley.

There are plenty of people who remember big Sam sticking Kevin Davies out there and the reulting mayhem that ensued.
