Owen as well. Greaves is still the benchmark - his goals per game record far outstrips everyone else's.
Pretty sure Rooney has a massive 1 World Cup goal to his name. Scored 4 in Euro 2004 when he first broke through and then added 2 in the tournaments after that.I'd love an excel sheet showing England's top 10 record goal scorers and add the teams they scored against and their rank when the goals were scored.
In my lifetime we've had Lineker, Shearer and then Rooney threaten/break Charltons record. I'm sure with each passing player the volume of goals against utter nobodies has increases.
How many of Rooney's record goals were at tournaments?
I'm not sure he'll score more than Rooney. He can maybe average a goal every other game so he needs over a hundred caps. It could happen but he needs to be first choice a long time, like another seven or eight years.

This is a bit of a myth IMO, Bobby Charlton scored a significant number of his goals against the minnows of his time. 5 against Luxembourg, similar against the US and if you include the likes of Northern Ireland, Wales and Switzerland then it soon starts adding up.

11 of Jimmy Greaves' international goals came against Northern Ireland, too - so if they're minnows, his goals against them account for a quarter of his England tally.
There's noHave you not heard about Kane? He's kind of a big deal.
He's beaten Rooney to 10 England goals by 4 games. He's actually become the fastest to 10 goals for england IIRC.
I'd say on his current trajectory he'll surpass Rooney with a few years to spare.
There's no denying it's possible but a lot of things need to go right for him. If he remains first choice striker and penalty taker for a number years and doesn't get injured it could happen. It's a lot of goals I'd sooner see him break the premier league scoring record which will be equally difficult.Have you not heard about Kane? He's kind of a big deal.

Rooney wasn't that prolific on a games to goal ratio. I'd expect by the time Kane is finished with England - possibly at older than 31, he'll have surpassed him.The point surely is that Rooney was in the England team at 16 and stayed first choice for 13 or 14 years? Kane has no chance of playing anywhere near as many games. That's why the odds are stacked heavily against him.
