Worth every penny

...for a team without the limited funds (and this opportunity cost) that we have.

don’t get me wrong, he’s amazing and I’d be chuffed but it’s far from straight forward. Imagine a young CB for 50/60 plus a 30m RB. You could make a good argument that would be better.

If he turned out like VVD, absolutely, but there’s no guarantee whatsoever

What if he goes for about £70m. We throw in Vertonghen for around £10m, Cameron Carter Vickers goes for about £5m+, KWP for about £10m+. Suddenly it’s looking like £40m-£45m outlay for one of the top centre halves in the world. This is all theoretical and involves a lot of guesswork, but surely that’s pretty realistic for us?

Same kinda thing could apply for any deal for Eze. If they want say £25m for him, sending Amos there on a permanent and loaning them Jack Clarke could bring it down to say £10m-£15m in fees.

That’s Koulibaly and Eze in for around £60m and Vertonghen, CCV, KWP and Amos out.
Not bad at all.

I'd prefer to spread the money between a RB and a DM, don't think getting a CB would be such an issue then.

If we make GLC’s contract a permanent this month, then the funds used might have some effect on our transfers in Jan.

Verts at 33 with 6 months left.10m?

And again - what if we did all that and put the money to use for multiple players?

I don't think we're going to get £10m for a 33 year old who is free in 6 months time

Well take the £10m out of it then. It’s still not major money. I’m sure Napoli would be open to taking Verts if they let Koulibaly come here.

Nobody really knows what teams are willing to pay for players, including KWP and CCV, we may be pleasantly surprised or totally underwhelmed. The idea I was getting at though is we can significantly reduce actual fees through player trading.

Didn’t Ajax also say Vertonghen was too pricey for them? They may have meant his wages tbh.

lol. Why would Napoli - a top Champions league team want CCV and KWP - two players not making the grade and an ageing Jan who will be out of contract in 6 months anyway

how often do these fantasy swap deals actually happen

cold hard £££ is what top sides want for their top players. Not our castaways

I don't think he's saying that they'd go to Napoli, just that that's how much we may get for them when they leave.

I do like that Mourinho is supposedly focusing on bringing in powerful athletes. I feel like it's somewhat been lost in memory, but at our best with Pochettino we were the most athletic and powerful team in the league.

Power in the center of the pitch with Dembele, Wanyama, and Dier, unrelenting pace on the flanks with Walker, Rose, and Son and even our less naturally athletic players ran their socks off like Kane, Lamela, Alli, and Eriksen.

Aging, injuries, and departures have sapped us of a lot that but I hope purchases like Sanchez, Ndombele, Sessegnon, and potentially Koulibaly, Soumare, etc indicate a return to powerful, physical, and pacey football. We just look so slow nowadays.

Lol right back at you. Clearly CCV and KWP won’t be going to Napoli.

I’d be surprised that if Koulibaly is indeed leaving for us they wouldn’t be interested in involving Vertonghen in the deal. They’d have a good immediate replacement giving them time to choose a long term successor.
I think Serie A would actually quite suit Jan in his twilight years.

Has anyone noticed the shirt number he’s worn for a number of seasons at Napoli? ??

Yeah, it's just the Guardian putting together a top 100 list, but I do think it provides some context that the only defenders rated ahead of Koulibaly are Van Dijk, De Ligt, Alexander-Arnold, and Robertson. The lad is a massive player.

Everything indicates that Jose wants tactical players in, in fact he stated that he needs to work tactically/technically with players. I imagine he does want a big powerful CB and maybe a couple of others but I'm not sure he'll be replicating Poch too much in that regard.

Herc's earlier ITK indicated, "Remit scouts have been given; tall athletic technical players".

Quite funny how highly rated Robertson is. There would have been a shit storm on here if we'd signed Hull's left back for our first team

I don't know, seem to remember plenty of people thinking highly of him at the time. Fair play to the lad though, as he just keeps getting better and better. Unbelievable application on and off the pitch. Annoyingly.
