what’s the main source of income for clubs now though? TV money or gate receipts? The former, surely
Broadcasting rights typically outweigh gate receipts significantly for most clubs. I can recommend Swissramble on Twitter if you want more data. He's making great summaries of clubs' finances.

The whole point of obtaining the infrastructure we now have is to be able to compete with the bigger spenders. It's not a bottomless pit of monet of course, but wringing every last penny out of every buy and sell, should not be the main aim any more. Sell on fees should be far less important that they were and trophies bring support and merchandising. That should be the priority now.
This makes sense why we gave new contracts to sissoko & Toby now 30yr old players.

We can now shift from just buying younger players will sell-on value to a combination of young prospects to futureproof the squad and more readymade players more in their prime.

COYS, get the chequebook out.

KK would be our VVD statement signing but as much as I don’t see it happening for one minute, even if it did it wouldn’t solve all our problems so like others have said If we have say £100m then I’d rather £100m was spent on Ake a CDM & RB than £80m on KK and £20 left over...

Fergie repeatedly said ( correctly) that on field success is the biggest driver of off field commercial success.

I hope you're right mate. Me and every other spurs fan would love for that to happen.

TV.
.
It is why tinpot West Ham have been in the top 20 of the world's richest clubs for the last few years and why their ticket prices are ridiculously chesp.

Agreed. You don’t hire a coach like Mourinho and then buy only youngsters. Yes we still need to invest in youth but we also want to win silverware in the short term - something José specializes in. Therefore buying established players that don’t necessarily need nurturing is important now too.

He's obviously a top defender but I can definitely understand the concerns with him being 28. Sure, we may get 4 years out of him but after that he's not gonna be worth anything. Outgoings very often determine incomings from a financial perspective. It may only serve to cripple us down the line.

Kinda seems arbitrary but I don't think we should be targeting outfield players for big fees and wages over the age of 27. Acting like a big club doesn't mean we sign these kinds of players, it means we should be prepared to spend big when there is a clear financial and footballing case. Ndombele and Lo Celso classic examples.

If we're spending north of £60m i'd much rather we went for Ruben Dias. Smart business for me in January would be Dias, Soumare and a striker in on loan.

If we've learned anything from the past few years it should be that any player who's likely to be in demand can run a contract out no matter what age they are. They younger they are, the more likely this sort of thing can happen. Times have changed and players are more clued up on how to maximise their earnings. With that in mind, I think Koulibaly's age becomes less of an issue, and possibly even a bit of an advantage. I do worry though that we'll chuck a huge chunk of money at this deal when we really need a quality DM and fullbacks, and in the simplest terms, the way to stop shipping too many goals usually runs much deeper than CBs.

If we would continue playing today's formation, Koulibaly would be more important than DM, i think Winks could be great there with 3 defenders behind him.

You saw how bad Winks was today right? And that when he went off and Lo Celso and Lamela came on we were much, much better?

If the club dropped 150m on Soumare, Bogle and Koulibaly I think that would significantly sort this shit out.
Couldn’t agree more sadly we all know deep down we won’t be signing any of them . Koulibaly will end up at at rival and we will scratch our bollocks knowing that dier and Sanchez will still be our defensive options ??‍♂️

if Koulibaly was so good why hasn’t anyone decent come in for him. I’ve seen Napoli play and he is error prone. He isn’t the fastest either. If VVD is your measure this guy doesn’t cut the mustard.

Where is the proof he is second best CB in the world? Answer the fucking question!

Mate you have a tendency to hyperbole that can be breath taking at times. So I should believe you because you say so? Sorry, your opinion hasnt impressed me in the past and doesn’t impress me now.
Others teams are in for him though ? . FFS, just when you think this "news"paper couldn't get any more naff.

A top level CB like Koulibaly looks like it's going to eat too much of our budget. Honestly if Sanchez's hamstring isn't going to be a big problem I'd stick it out with Sanchez, Toby, Foyth, Tanganga for the rest of the season and look at other problem areas like RB, DM and a forward player that we can likely address for less. Look at CB in the summer. Convinced with a proper DM and RB Sanchez and Toby can do a job for at least the rest of the season.

And what exactly is our budget?

Unless your DL, then nobody really knows what our budget is.
