I would imagine so. That is a very big release clause thoughSurely even if we pay up this guy will have his pick of the world's best clubs. Can't see it happening at all.

Not on top of the details here but that can't be right. The release clause is a contractual obligation to agree to sell the player in the event a bid of that value (in cash up front) is made. If Chelsea made that offer up front Leipzig wouldn't have a choice but to accept the bid. There must have been concessions - Leipzig say they will accept instalments if Chelsea wait until the summer, for example.Leipzig wouldn't let him go in Jan even if we did trigger his release clause. They're not letting Nkunku sign for Chelsea until the summer his release clause was already triggered at the end of the last transfer window.
If we really do intend to go for him, he is one target i think we only get if QSI invest. There's no other way we will compete with Chelsea or whichever financially doped team go for him
If I am not mistaken the clause didnt become active until summer 2023 and Chelsea got in there early agreeing a deal for summer 2023.Not on top of the details here but that can't be right. £98m... Have some of you lost your minds?
That's the problem, we are prepared to buy the Sanchez and Rodon types but we won't splash on excellence. We'll rather buy two 40m players than one 80m oneIsn't that roughly what we've paid for Sanchez, Emerson, Rodon and Sessegnon?

We need owners who are prepared to do the latter

I agree, but my comment was more about situations like the Gvardiol one, where the need in the squad is for very good defenders and Gvardiol is one of the best out there, but, because of his price tag, we would instead buy a few lesser players that would in any case add up to what he's worth rather than buy him. Levy will never sanction a 98m deal, even if it'll significantly boost the first 11 we put out on the pitch. We would never do a VdV+Alisson type deal let alone buy one of that calibre. Not necessarily. In my books Deki was a good buy for 40 m and Bentancur for 20 m, while the 60m Ndombele solution was a disgrace. We need to identify the right talent fitting to the clubs vision and managers philosophy. Our recruitment before last January window was for a long time a disaster.
I really wish we would just pay up for once and secure this guy. Imagine a defence of Porro Romero NEW CB Gvardiol Udogie. It could completely transform us and give the midfield and attackers more confidence to express themselves.

Up front to activate the release? The fact this is winnered by some answers my original questionIsn't that roughly what we've paid for Sanchez, Emerson, Rodon and Sessegnon?
