I really hope that him and Poch want to build a legacy here and not just see us as a stepping stone in their careers.
That was one of the best things Ive ever read on here.
The stuff about losing good academy coaches and some the current group of coaches not being quite as good is something we've all been discussing in the development thread for the last couple of years. I think Inglethorpe particularly was a huge loss and someone we should have done more to keep.
Really not sounding good for Bentaleb - being mentioned in the same breath as Townsend, Adebayor, Capoue etc - all of whom left after becoming "problematic".
Yup exactly. It was previously more individually focused and now they want to aim towards a greater focus on team work, then the focus of elements like tactics will reap greater rewards.I think Poch is and what JM is saying is that this needs to be better integrated into academy teaching, which he's saying has been more individually focused. Although, as I have said elsewhere, I've always thought one of the most encouraging things about the ethos JM had put in place was the collective tactical awareness being taught in our academies. Maybe Poch has just moved this to a higher level and JM is saying it's his remit to make sure the academy aspire to that level ?
John McDermott has been with us for eleven years. If he does leave at some point in the future we've hardly been a stepping stone.
I was quite annoyed and surprised to see Inglethorpe leave for Liverpool, at a time when we were finishing above them and looked to have a better academy.
He was manager of my second team (Exeter City), when Spurs snapped him up, and he was held in very high esteem by the Exeter fans. Taking Man Utd to a replay in the FA Cup (Ronaldo was nutmegged by a non-league defender ), saving Exeter from administration in the process, didn't exactly do his reputation any harm.
The Liverpool U21 team now coached by him absolutely mullered our U21 recently, playing a very "Poch/Klopp" brand of high energy, hard press, possession based football.
Isn't Inglethorpe essentially their version of McDermott? The Liverpool U21 team now coached by him absolutely mullered our U21 recently, playing a very "Poch/Klopp" brand of high energy, hard press, possession based football.
I think it was a huge mistake to let him go. But I think this was possibly one of the flip sides to Sherwood being brought in. Inglethorope was a proper coach, who was very much on board with McDermott's philosophy and he had our U18 NextGen group - a group which has produced Pritchard, Carroll, Veljkovic, Bentaleb, Kane, Smith, - playing an outstanding brand of football that saw us wallop teams like Inter and Barca. From what I can gather, Inglethorpe did most of the coaching of that side, but Sherwood took most of the credit and put his name of team sheet.
I reckon Inglethorpe suddenly realised his standing and chances of advance had been dealt a blow with the arrival of Sherwood and Liverpool came knocking with an offer of promotion to U21 coach.
