They were spending the last of the Felliani money they got from Manchester United.
True and someone else also pointed out that the clubs all got a mega TV deal this season too so I suppose they felt more confident about spending more on a player.

their squad is getting on a bit too -

howard (35)
jagielka (32)
alcaraz (32)
distin (37)
baines (30)
hibbert (33)
barry (33)
pienaar (32)
osman (33)
eto'o (33)
kone (31)

probably going to have to cash in on barkley at some point and rebuild.

That is incredible. They really do need to invest in some younger players. 3 of their back 4 are 30+ as well as their keeper. Distin needs replacing and I know Stones is there but bloody hell!!

That is not an insignificant job in terms of resources either.

I like Martinez so I do think Everton will do ok this season but not to the same level as last year.

If I was a toffee's fan I would be questioning why I spent all of last season taking the mickey out of Moyes.

They were lapping it up and loving how good Martinez was.

Not so great now, eh.

As someone else said, their fans are pretty toxic at the ground. It's weird, because they're a likeable, family club until you actually play them.

Best course of action is to sell Barkley to City for a ridiculous English premium, Stones will fetch plenty too soon, and sign some players in that 22-26 range.
