The South Korean star has stepped up behind the scenes and left some surprised at just how much of an impact he has had in his new role

Bit of a cynical reaction thus far to the article. Can't quite understand why - it seems very positive.

I also thought he was alright in the last game. Still maybe a little goal shy but good passing, showed he still has some pace in the tank to get by a man etc.

Interesting. Because Sonny smiles rather than scowls and go around with a Roy Keane like manner lots of people assume he is weak. His record proves far from it. Played in more than one foreign country with success. For years dragged his national team through competitions. Maintained a top level of fitness with huge demands on himself as a national icon and a world class forward.

Clearly always been a leader so no surprise if he does well as captain.

He's going to be a great successor of Hugo, much better than Kane would've ever been.

Genuine question...what does a football captain actually do these days?

Seems to me as though it's basically just being a bit of a media figurehead, and that the days of the captain being the manager's voice on the pitch are long gone. It's certainly not like cricket where the captain still has a few decisions to make e.g. setting the field, choosing when to change bowlers, choosing if/when to declare etc.

Maybe they're expected to do more stuff with younger players? Perhaps be a bit of a "union rep" and act as a conduit between the players and the management? Like I said, I just don't really know...
