When was the last time one of our players scored directly from a free-kick?

I can't remember anybody scoring this season, and I'm not too sure about last season. This is very surprising considering we have great free-kick takers in Bale and VDV, as well as Kaboul and Modric.

Come to think about it, we haven't scored many in-direct goals from free-kicks and corners this season. In fact recently our set-pieces have been poor. It is quite worrying because we won't always be able to score from open play.

I have to say I think our freekicks and corners in general are bordering on disgraceful, I almost expect them now to not clear the first defender. Do we work on them in training?

Pav scored a screamer in the euros, and VDV scored one in pre-season, other than that we've been terrible at set pieces. I think we've scored from 3 corners this season. We had about 16 today.....

to be fair, you don't see many teams putting away free kicks these days. I blame the balls.

They are so poor, as is the crossing from anyone except for Bale.

General rules for a good ball in.

It must have pace, or a) the attacker can't generate pace on the finish, and b) the defenders get too much time to attack it.

You must not put too much whip on it, unless you have Beckham style technique. (Leans back, and WHACKS it while wrapping around it.) Otherwise, you top it like a tennis ball.

You must keep it away from the keeper.

You must beat the first man.

We can't do any of them. Modric's corner's are horrific.

Our free kicks & corners have been terrible for the past 3/4 seasons it's like we don't practice them at all in training!

They've been awful for years. There's just no logic in some of our choices. I don't know how Modric is still our corner taker sometimes and there was a time last season where Bale hit the post and the crossbar in a short period with a free kick and he was seemingly taken off duty.

I think Bale is our best set piece taker personally but he needs to be given a consistent run of taking them, not just the odd one here and there.

One thing that annoys me is when BAE/Bale/Walker/Lennon race down to the line and sends in a floater to VDV/Defoe/Modric. Seriously. What are they going to do against a centerback with a floated cross?

We should try smashing a few through the wall - clearly the chipped shots are not working (could be the ball I suppose). VDV and Bale have been crap.

We have tried that, the occasions he has been allowed to take a freekick it hasnt gone anywhere near the goal! :lol:

Benny all the way for me. The guys left foot is like a rocket launcher. I remember last season V Young Boys (ahh the memorys). He hit one from about 35 yards clean into one of the defenders, I thought the guy had broken a rib.
