How many pages did the womens world cup the last it was held get here? 5? 1? 0?
I'd say 61 is a big improvement so far. I bet next time it'll be 100+ .
So the men have stopped scratching their balls on the sofa, reached for the remote control, and watched it. Thats a positive sign.

If anyone can't see that this event was on a different level from even four years ago then I don't know what to say.

Women's football was just boot the ball and run. It's not anymore.

For me it’s not the use of the word soccer that’s annoying, it’s that they’ve used the word football for some other sport that clearly isn’t football.

Except American football is a code of football as it evolved from rugby football and association football - the first US college game was based on the English FA's first set of rules.

And at the beginning, you couldn't pass the ball forward in American football. It was Rugby with downs.

I enjoyed it am enjoying it immensely .. I don't think I will bother too much with the national levels stuff
at this moment in time but I am sure the game as it is now has the potential to grow massively in the future.

I was still scratching my balls on the sofa, while watching it!

It started off closer to association football as in the first game you weren't allowed to throw or catch the ball and it had to be kicked into the opposing team's goal. It wasn't until Harvard played Canadian teams, who used rugby football rules, that elements of rugby crept into American football.

I think some of you are being overly critical about the womens game.
It's still growing and improving but there have been some really good players in this tournament and some of the games have been good to watch.
I think the pressure got to our girls tonight.
They were doomed as soon as Theresa May wished them good luck.
Enjoying the tournament though. The first half was played at a far better tempo than the second though. In Tennis the women only play 3 sets. Perhaps 30 minutes each way?

I've watched a fair bit of footie at that level (Clapton FC) and I can't see it at all. I think the US would compete with a Conference or League Two team personally.

I think they lost 8-2 to an u-15 team. They would get absolutely battered by a conference or league 2 team

The problem with women's football is that a men's pub side would give most of these teams a good game.
This can't be said of tennis, sprinting etc, where a female athlete would lose to a male athlete, but would annihilate the rest of the population.
This could be the reason women's football doesn't feel special or elite to some, including myself.
Thinking again this could probably be said of a lot of team sports

Why do people constantly find the need to compare women's football against men's? Not just you but I always find it strange. I don't see people comparing women's 100m runners to men's or women's boxers against men's etc.

The quality of the women's game is improving all the time and it will get even better with more investment.

I have to admit I was ready to criticise it but as it went on I just saw it as football.

For our girls to succeed they need to take a leaf out of the USA books and be more professional and play for time when they have to.

Credit to Phil Neville to some men this would have been beneath them, he's been brilliant good luck to him.

Well there was talk about having smaller goals at one stage, as the keepers tend to be smaller. That was written off but maybe slightly shorter halfs could be an idea? I think they're ok playing 90mins though, I think the heat out there has been quite draining.

Are you kidding me?

Yes not all of the teams are on that level, but the gulf in class between the USA and the majority is because they are funded better and have been leading the way for a long time.

England have got a lot better, the game against Norway was very good. I feel that they just lacked composure tonight.

But to say it’s a comedy is extremely disingenuous
The USWNT is funded awfully, actually. The players are good because the sport gets funding. Not by USSF though. USSF is too interested in funding the poor mens team, nepotism and lining the pockets of mls’ big wigs. The USWNT has an ongoing lawsuit against USSF over their dismal funding and dismal wages compared to the USMNT

The main difference is the physicality. I go and watch my local conference side quite a lot, and to be honest, the quality of football is better at England women's or USA women's level. The only reason a conference side would beat, say, the USA women's team, is because they'd just generally be a lot stronger than them.

I think it's pointless comparing the two, men's football and women's football are like two different sports, almost. Men's football is more about athleticism, whereas in women's football, you seem to be rewarded more often for actual skill and technique, which is quite refreshing to see.

Thinking again about my comment /|\

It might have come across as I can't be arsed to watch national level footballs be it Arse/Che/City Ladies etc.

What I am trying to say is something I have said before about football on TV reaching saturation point.

I probably watch at least 3-4 televised games at the weekend and the same in the week and I have to try and have a life/family balance of sorts. Nothing more sinister than that.

Agree with you @NinjaTuna they are like different sports, and not much point comparing. Men's football has been developed over 100+ years whereas the women's game is nowhere near.

Most boys grow up playing football from 3-4 years old. It's a normal thing to do and there are no issues to overcome.

My youngest daughter is 7 and she loves playing football but she often tells me how the boys won't let her play at lunchtime etc. About a year ago I took her to a "mixed" football session and she was the only girl there. She didn't like it much, recently I found her an all girls team and she enjoys it a lot. But there aren't many around.

Personally, I enjoy the women's game for what it is. There is and has been a some really great technical female players, its a shame Louisa Necib retired. The improvement over the past 5-10 years has been massive.

Did we miss every pen we had at this tournament?

Scored one against Scotland in the group stage.

With regards to England and women's football in general, I've found the tournament very watchable.
Sure, the standard isn't up there with elite men's football, but the same can be said about Conference/lower league football - doesn't make it any less enjoyable.
England's biggest problem last night, and for a while in the previous game, was sloppy passing, but again it's easy to say that when you watch a different level with the PL week in week out. I'm glad England tried to play football rather than lumping it forward.
I thought the US team went a little to far with some of their theatrics last night and can understand why there's been a bit of a backlash about their behaviour in the tournament.
Could argue that Horan should have been booked more than once during the game, and it's no surprise she was causing a distraction during Houghton's post match interview.
I didn't like Rapinoe's "you can't win a title without a gay in the team" social media statement either. Making it very much about her instead of the team. Mind you, if that's all it takes, maybe Poch should sign her up
There's a reason why their team are technically ahead of everyone else - finance and the fact that it's an obligation that women's sport is treated the same as men's sport from high-school upwards.
BUT... As was pointed out last night, none of that squad have succeeded in playing in Europe at club level.

Don't see it happening, but would love for them to get battered in the final.

Good game last night. We were beat by the better team but gave it everything. We need to work on our passing, we were really sloppy in that area and have been all tournament. The WSL will hopefully get more and more exposure over the coming few years, more live games, technically better players starting to come through and so on.

Rapinoe should STFU and leave identity politics out of football.

Exactly. The majority of the women aren't going to be as fast or strong as the men, but there's no reason why they can't be as good technically.

Comparing the mens game to the womens game is like saying you don't like Mo Farrah as he's not as fast as Usain Bolt.

What do you lot think about some of the hugs and kisses from Phil Neville towards his players? I'm a bit surprised that someone would do that in this day and age.
