At the moment, England are getting an automatic place. If we slipp down then we go intothe draw of the luck team or teams to get through.

BOF said we were entered into the intertoto just in case the worst comes to the worst.

That season when that Mendez effort was disallowed, it was spouted about that we would get into Europe by that means as we didnt make a fuss after lossing those two points, two points that would have got us into Europe by our league position. It never happened so dont see it happening now.

I read that we have entered the intertoto cup for that eventualitity, but yes, we really seem to have gone backwards.

But if Pompey have entered the Intertoto, then we'll not get in there either, will we?

This is arguably our most bankable way of getting into Europe. Although with a couple of sendings off since then (Dec 30th), I wouldn't be so sure that we're still up there.

point, but I thought nearly all those sending offs where in the cups, which means that is irrelevant to the context of fairplay!

and after us we have City and United which hopefully would both get to europe and we cant of gone bellow reading!!

Good point, well made, sir.

And of course 90 minutes away is the best of all. But the reality of the challenge is pretty huge, even before considering they are a bogey side.

Well the circumstances were slightly different then. England were nowhere near topping the fair play league that year. At the moment if things stay as they are, we'll qualify.

This actually genuinely could be our way into Europe. England will hopefully remain top which gives us the automatic place and all the other clubs around us in the premiership fair play table should qualify for europe anyway.

With regards to the red/yellow cards its only part of the way the points are made up anyway so the couple we've had shouldn't effect it too much.

Obviously I hope we don't qualify this way as it means we won't have beaten the Russians, but if we have to go in via the fair play then so be it.

Its true, we still only have 1 red card in the league so far, and that was Robbie Keane's red card. :bang:

I'm like 90% sure we applied for Intertoto last season as well - just in case, don't think that means we are going backwards.

That fair-play League is quite interesting, they award marks for:
  • Red & Yellow Cards (I think on this one each club starts with a maximum of 10pts a game with pts being deducted per card received)
  • Positive Play
  • Respect Towards Opponent (RO)
  • Respect Towards Referee (RR)
  • Behavious of Officials (by which I guess they must mean club officials)
Anyway surprise surprise that Chelsea come bottom on RR.

We come third behind Arsenal (1st) and Chelsea (2nd) for positive play.

We come second on RO. Chelsea come last.

Even our club officials are well behaved, we're third thus far, with Chelsea and Liverpool languishing in the bottom four.

Us and Everton are joint top of the league on points scored but Liverpool have a couple of games in hand thus are officially in the lead on the pts per game standard, with our closest rivals outside the top six being Reading in sixth.

In fact we'd be streaking ahead were in it not for our card tally and i can think of at least a couple of harsh Reds we got this year.

As someone else said, could yet be our best hope for Europe next year.

Just a general observation:

I would think not applyiing for Intertoto last year and this would be going backwards. It would show a lack of ambition for not wanting to get into Europe (kinda like Reading). Specifically considering our League positions both years approaching the deadlines for application to it.
