I think Dier is the perfect foil next to a top class CB. Dier's weakness is pace and positioning for arial balls at the moment, but look how much he's come on in the last few months even. When he's in position he's fantastic in the air, he's strong as an ox and is great on the ball with a Toby-esque range of passing. Yes the consistency is not 100% there yet, but he's already the best we have at his position and will only get better with more time playing.

If you could get someone like Gimenez or Skriniar (very unlikely now I know) next to him, that would be an incredible low defensive block. If you could get someone more athletic like Upemecano (not happening I know but in his mould) you could afford to push up the pitch a bit and have that player cover behind Dier.

I rate him massively, and given more time and the right partner he could be a rock for many years.

I regret this take so much. Turns out his frailties were being covered up by the low block. As soon as we aren't playing 7 back with our wingers shielding the full backs, he's absolutely useless. Maybe he needs more time in his position? I don't know what the answer is, but I'm pretty sure he isn't our future solution at CB.

He isn't good enough. At 27 years old, not sure how much more time we can give him. A lot of his early career with us was spent in midfield and part of the problem is I just don't think he has learnt the game at the highest level as a CB.
No idea if he would be any better now if he had started out at CB for us when he was younger, developed his game there and got his basic mistakes out the way.

I watch him and have no real confidence in him. For me, one of his biggest weaknesses is his concentration levels and decision making. Always feel he (and Sanchez for that matter) can be manipulated by any half decent forward. If I'm an opposition manager, Dier is a clear weakness I'd be targeting. Defending has a lot to do with being a step or two ahead in the head and unfortunately always feel Dier (and again Sanchez) are a few steps behind.

are we still debating this clown. he will never ever be good enough for a supposed top 6 club its just a fact. he's at best a squad player to keep around the club for morale as i rather winks fucks off first and we need homegrown players

I really don't like berating players but Eric is simply not good enough, how many times do we have to watch him shirk responsibility and lose flight of the ball resulting in a goal.... And the cheek of him to try and blame Tanganga for it... DISGUSTEN! Time for him to move to a more suitable league, Slovenian 5th division is his level.

You can't blame Dier and completely excuse Mourinho when Mourinho gave this guy a new deal and has made him one of his favourites

Jose doesnt give anybody contracts. Levy does it to protect the value of the asset, rightly or wrongly.

He was fine in the low block, is no use when he has to move forward or backwards with the run of play.

Of course, but it is absolutely evident that Dier is one of Mourinho's favourites. Even Mourinho has said so. So my point still stands.

Him trying to shift the blame onto Tanganga should be the final straw. Trying to throw a kid under the bus to cover his own failings. Not just a terrible player but a coward who wants no responsibility for his short-comings. The fact that he’s neither young nor homegrown as well means he’s just total deadweight at this stage and he’s bringing others down with him. He’s making his teammates nervous rather than giving them confidence. Convinced he’s only retained his place because he’s a Mourinho fanboy. Don’t see how we improve whilst he’s still a fixture in our defence. Absolute poison to our performances at the moment.

Well your point doesn't stand because he didn't give him a contract.

I'm with you as far as not having a reason for his constant inclusion despite all the errors though.

well if Mourinho feels he's his fav and keeps playing him, we're going nowhere

Stinks it up weekly at this point. Whatever we’re paying him, it’s too much. Wouldn’t stand out in the Championship, and yet he’s managed to carve out a position here. I’d sell him for a kfc family bucket to share out amongst the squad

This guy needs to be first out of the door. Utter garbage. Zero sense of danger whatsoever. Sort out the centre halves and we’re a good side.

How many goals has this guy cost us this season. Easily 50% of the goals we’ve conceded in the league
