I don't think anything has changed, they weren't looking to sell him because he wasn't good enough he was always good enough so playing well doesn't change that and neither does what the coach wants. It is all about finances and that hasn't changed.

Possibly in terms of Gallagher being the next target in this area but given Bergvall’s age, I still think we can improve upon either Hojbjerg or Skipp whilst allowing him time to settle and develop.

Despite his professionalism PEH isn’t a great fit for us and you can say the same of skipp but one is no doubt worth more in terms of the fee we’d get and wages we’d free up, so I’d still be shocked if we don’t do something else in the summer in and around the midfield.

Yeah, as good as he may be, I’m not sure it’s a good idea to rely on an eighteen year old from another country and league to be the main cover for Bentancur/Bissouma/Sarr. Especially since we will hopefully have a lot more games next season.

We've already got Bissouma, Bentancur and Sarr competing for two spots. We're very light on club-trained players at the moment so I think - for now at least - we probably need to keep Skipp as well. Add Bergvall into the mix next season as well and I just don't really see Gallagher as any sort of priority.

Agreed, and Donley/Devine. Plenty of options, for me. I think a true DM is key and then filling out the defense with quality rotation options and obviously working on finding an elite attacker. I personally feel the money needed to get Gallagher could be far better utilized elsewhere to really round out the side.

True. However, assuming that we will be in Europe next season, it would IMO make sense with four solid options for those two CM spots.

It also seems to me that Ange likes a #8 with a really good engine, and that Sarr currently is our only option who fits that description to a tee. I am not saying that Gallagher is the answer, but I can see the logic behind adding another CM in that mould (to compete/rotate with Sarr).

Yeah, whether Gallagher is the answer remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t take much for e.g Sarr to be injured for a few weeks and Biss suspended, and we find our season completely derailed.

Especially as the stakes should be higher next season: a few weeks injury could mean missing a crucial Champions League match as well as league matches. And if we have any aspirations of challenging for the league as opposed to just top four, we will have even less room to drop points.

Sure, I think that’s fair. But I also think you could make a case that they are given the opportunity to earn a spot in preseason and if one of them (or both) aren't assessed as being ready, we still have Kulusevski who can play in that role. For me, a new DM and Bergvall along with our current guys we should be fine. Sell Hojbjerg and Lo Celso and then evaluate Skipp and how the squad makeup shakes out. But the original point stands, don’t think we need a huge splurge here, personally.

I hope we string Chelsea along and agree with the other PL clubs to do the same with all their players that are up for sale, and then all pull out at the last minute, after contracts are all finalised and just require signatures. They’d be absolutely shafted on the financial rules.

I think if we go for Gallagher, part of the point would be it’s not a splurge. We’d be looking to take advantage of Gallagher’s contract situation and Chelsea’s financial problems. I think we would be looking to do the deal at the £30ish mill mark, which in today’s market isn’t that much.

To put it in perspective, Ndombele, Richarlison, Johnson, Romero, Maddison, Sanchez, Porro, van de Ven and Sissoko all cost somewhere between £60m and £50m each and Lo Celso was also close to £30m I think. If we do buy Gallagher he would be towards the lower end of that price range and some of those players were bought four or five years ago or more.

I love some of the optimism of the fans in here about some of our young players, but I think the club needs to be a bit more level headed than the fans. For a start we’ve seen players burn out from playing far too much football at a young age.

Secondly it doesn’t take much for a fanbase to turn on players, even young players. We’ve seen players having to close their social media due to abuse. We’ve also seen fans reduce one of our own players to tears with booing. You throw a youngster into that, and if he’s not ready it could have a detrimental impact on his future here.

The standards here now are super high. It’s not even enough to win, we complain about the performance! I’m not convinced we have the patience for untested youth players filling in when Bentancur or Maddison is injured or Bissouma is suspended etc.

Problem is that for Europe next season our senior squad of 25 will consist of 21 overseas+homegrown, plus 4 from Whiteman, Austin, Tanganga, Skipp, Parrott, Lyons-Foster and Robson. Which is precisely why I think Skipp needs to stay.
