I have to admit, that I was lukewarm on Townsend until today. My eyes were definitely opened to his potential. I am totally conflicted by the competition and whether this was just one game, but my god he was awesome today.

Remember he scored on the highest spenders in Europe this summer in under 15 minutes of play. He was a foot from scoring a beauty against Espanyol in the sub role yet again. Yes, this was certainly a step down in competition, but everything about that lad is 180 degrees from the big eyed scared puppy dog we saw play for us last fall. That dude WANTS this so bad, and I love to see a player step up when he's given a shot.

it wasn't just today... I don't think he did himself many favors this preseason but this game was better for him. The problem he faces is that he needs games and he just may not get them in a side that's trying so hard to claim and own a top four spot. :(

Haha... I laugh at all the people shouting praises his way now. How fickle us fans are!

Agreed. Thought he was excellent at QPR and have been calling for him to start over Lennon ever since the Bale stuff picked up steam, and those comments were initially treated as though they carried leprosy themselves. Townsend is a fantastic player who were he to be given the chance, would easily score the double digit goal tally we need from our RW this season. Would much prefer us to shore up the CAM matter before worrying about a direct Bale replacement, as this fella can do a serious job.

Right there with you man. Check my history for years and most of my comments are directed at Lennon's shortcomings. Andros has been a better option for a year now.

Just about 10 days ago, I got so many negs for suggesting Townsend is a better option than Lennon in a 433 formation and that I'd rather sell Lennon than him should we get all our targets in.

Props to ya then. Lennon is a solid player IMO, but Townsend's knack for getting on the stat line has seen him surpass the older man. If Lamela comes in, I'd be furious to see Townsend let go over Lennon.

If Townsend goes it will be because he wants consistent playing time - with a 21 year old phenom like Lamela coming in he might feel like that isn't likely here, especially if he fancies an outside shot at making the England squad this year.

I agree, but we're not sure Lamela will necessarily succeed here. He has the tools that would suggest he very likely would, but being partnered in a rotation in Townsend would feature a very strong RW position in all of our league and cup games.

I by no means hate Lennon. He has been as loyal as they come and has performed great for us over the years. But when there is a better option, we have to play it.

I would keep Lennon for 1 more year. We need him while Lamela settles down. Next yr when Lamela is settled we can sell Lennon to a top 10 club and have Lamela and Townsend in RW.

THe fella will sit on the bench sulking.... dont think its a good idea.

I think we should offload Siggy as well.... poor performance so far. Just lack that movement to create space or even make penetrating passes. Sell Siggy and get Eriksen would be a wiser choice.

Never wanted to sell Townsend but thought a prem loan (with recall option in Jan) was a good idea. May still be.

Always been impressed with his dribbling and shooting but the two assists last night were a game changer for me. The vision for the first was superb.

Worth a starting place over Lennon on Sunday as a reward.

Definitely a big night for him yesterday - delivered when he needed to when pressure for places is on.

Ok opposition may not have been the best, but he still needed to do the business.

Think what tonight showed is the strength of the squad - and believe AVB is going to be able to rotate players without upsetting balance. He can rest them when needed, or change tactics if required.

Not sure any player will be guaranteed a starting place, so all will need to buy into the squad mentality and not demand first team football. I hope Townsend will be one of those that falls into this category because certainly worthy of a place in the squad and will IMO play his fair share of games this season.

Townsend had an excellent game, but I would make two points and the first of those is that it was Tblisi and the second is that i don't think his first touch is particularly good. On the other side, he scored an excellent goal and was involved in two others.

Everyone will get games this year, I'm sure of that. The reason we've had players playing every game while others don't is because we'd have an obvious drop in quality. The changes we've made mean everyone can be kept happy while keeping the team at high quality and having players rested
