Hi all - just getting into the cycling game and need a new bike. I have got a Cannondale Hybrid at the moment - Soros...pretty rubbish. Time to upgrade.
Got my eyes set on a Canyon - specifically the Ultimate CF SL 7 - 105 although no disc brakes (is this a big deal?) - https://www.canyon.com/en-gb/road-b...l-7/2751.html?dwvar_2751_pv_rahmenfarbe=GY/BK

What do people think of these? Should I go Ultegra? Do I need to upgrade the wheels immediately? Really like the look of the Aero bikes but they are aggressive in their riding position.

These days I don't think there's a lot in it between the Ultegra and 105. Ultegra is marginally lighter and better quality materials, 105 a little cheaper. I guess it depends what you want to do with the bike.
Are you using it mainly for commuting, or recreation? Some bikes are made for longer rides and are therefore more 'comfortable', others more for racing and are stiffer and more responsive. Your wheel choice might reflect that, though before worrying too much I'd give the wheels that come with the bike a chance first. Wheels can get pretty pricey if you're looking for a genuine upgrade.
Disc brakes/rim brakes is an argument that can go on as long as a Spurs New Manager thread. I've only ever ridden rim brakes, so can't really add anything on that front.

It would just be for recreation - 30 miles or so ride on the weekend kind of thing. I think the 105 may be the best value here and, as you said, there isn't a crazy amount of difference.
Father in law has a Pinarello with rim brakes and has no complaints about it at all.

Its weird that quickstep alpha vinyl aren't taking him in their TdF squad.
Guess they have a younger better option as a sprinter.

He was asked that, has not heard from team. Given the way he rode today and at Giro they have a headache.

Jakobsen. Good sprinter, but not great. Sadly for Cav it seems only an injury to Jacobsen will get him a ride. Ironically that's what happened last year to give Cav his chance and allowed him to equal Merckx' record wins. If he wants to beat it he'll probably have to move to a smaller team, but the flip side of that is he'll effectively have to freelance in the sprints and borrow wheels to the line. The flip flip side of that is that there's no-one better at doing that.
Either way, he's probably only got one more shot next year, if he wants to keep going that long.

There was talk during the race that Cav is looking for 2 more years. Not many world tour options.

I think he'd be a good draw for someone next year. I reckon he's good for another couple of victories and imagine him beating Merckx in the team jersey of (I dunno) B&B Hotels-KTM. Amazing publicity.

Such a shame, would have been brilliant to see him break the record in th GB rainbow jersey. Shows what a squad they have when two national champions are not selected.

Bit of a disappointment on a personal level too. Don't know about others, but I definitely prefer uphill finishes and mountain stages in particular (for the racing, but also because I love the aesthetics). I struggle a bit to keep interest in the sprint stages, unless there's someone to cheer for. We've been spoilt over the last 15 years because there was usually a good chance Cav was going to race for the win.
I can see myself not watching half the stages properly, just catching up with the highlights later.

Thomas, Yates and Pidcock in the IG team. Will be interesting to see how young Tom goes.

Maiden Tour for Tom. Looks a bit too flat for him early on, but 5 is the cobbled stage and 6 gets a bit lumpy in the last 30km. Could see him go well on both of those if given licence.
Don't really see IG challenging for GC though this year. Thomas won in Switzerland but I think three weeks might be too much to sustain against Pogacar and Roglic, and I don't think Yates has the form this year. Hopefully IG decide to go a bit funky and leave the grinding to Jumbo Visma.

Interesting. Obviously hope Declercq gets better soon (if he's even feeling it!). But unless Jakobsen is the one who drops out, how the hell are they going to marshal having them both in the run-in to a sprint! Suspect Cav would be left to his own devices, which would probably be fine as he's the best in the world at doing that.

will be interesting to see if IG get any closer to Jumbo and Pogacar with that team. After the accident to Bernal and a few years before others (Hayter, Pidcock and Tullet) are ready to challenge it feels like theyre getting left further behind in the Grand Tours at the moment.

Think it's just the usual cycle (lol) of peaks and troughs. I think the switch from SKY to IG brought an end to that era of domination and a change in racing style. We've seen it a lot more this year that they aren't just going to ride KMs on the front, but get involved in some racing. I'm pleased to see it, though, like you, I think they're a couple of years away from it bearing fruit.
JV have spent 4 or 5 years now changing their own style more to the old SKY format, and tbf to them they've done a really good job of it. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them take more than one podium place.
I guess they'd back whoever felt the best but due to all the shenanigans that go on in the sprint he may be able to act as a lone wolf.
