I know that this is going against the grain and that everyone is understandably emotional right now. But, in some respects, I don't believe that what we just witnessed was such a terrible all round performance.

Sure, there were three howlers at the back that cost us dearly. And I concede that that is what counts. Football - all sport, even - is about pivotal moments and the best make sure that those pivotal moments go their way. On such criteria, today's game was a categorical failure.

But I was encouraged by the way that the team tried to play, at least. Dominated possession. Passed and moved well. The intention was positive. But we were badly let down by the final ball. We worked so many good positions down the flanks but not once - not one single, fucking time - did Aurier or Davies put in a good final ball. Absolutely crucified us. We need good full backs. Desperately. If we had them now, we would have won that game. Comfortably.

This one isn't on Mourinho.
We dominated possession but that's because they let us have it in the first two thirds. I disagree that we "passed and moved well". The movement was shocking, countless times Lamela or GLC was looking for options and everyone was static. And we passed it side to side and between defence and midfield OK, but everything else was shit.

I agree we need better full backs, but the problems run deeper than that. Our attack is like strangers playing together for the first time. There's zero discernable plan. We look absolutely clueless in the final third.

I attacked Jose in the match thread but my anger has since shifted to the squad. Poch couldn’t motivate them and get them playing. I find that pretty abhorrent from the squad considering he turned most of them into the players they are and ultimately they cost him his job.

Jose has since come in and has tried to fix our defence on the assumption that our attack is good enough to fix itself and it’s left us with the same issues. Players that can’t attack or defend and generally don’t seem to give a fuck whether we win or lose.

I don’t think any manager is going to be a success at this club until there is a MAJOR overhaul.

Which I think begs the question: do we want a squad built in the image of what Mourinho wants or a manager we view as a longer term commitment. Levy surely thinks Mourinho can right the ship given his contract/appointment, but it’s going to take backing in the market, which as we all know is highly doubtful. This isn’t going to be a couple window scenario, either. I think we are at least 2 years away from really competing unless some of these players miraculously retrieve their heads from their asses.

Is the real truth that we will never reach the summit of the mountain we’re climbing because of Enic and their recruitment meddling.

Maybe it’s healthier to just accept that now.

Yeah I agree with this. It feels like Levy chose Mourinho because he’d believed Mourinho would inherit a squad ready to win trophies after the years Poch had spent preparing them.

In reality, he’s been left a team which looks tired, demotivated and in need of an overhaul. Like you say, Jose is not the man to do that.

With that said, I really don’t know who I would’ve actually chosen instead of Mourinho to lead this long term rebuild. I like Nagelsmann but also feel like he’s a bit of a hipster’s choice and he needs to do more before getting a big job in England.

Can’t believe half of you saying he needs to rebuild the squad. He wouldn’t be near the club and lord pochettino would still be here if that was the case
Yea and he doesn’t need to ‘re-build’ the squad but we do need a few very good key signings ideally:
RB
CB
LB
DM
AM
ST
won’t all happen in one window but this is what we need.

I can see man city going in big for him, Aguero and Kane to get them back the League title. Guaranteed medals and a boat load more medals. It’s gonna happen. Gabriel Jesus isn’t Aguero‘s replacement. Kane will be.
Don’t think he suits how they play but fair play to him if he goes there he deserves success.

I personally like Nagelsmann but he’d actually probably be best with a DoF like Campos as he Appears to thrive with young, emerging, hungry talent which Is right in Campos’ wheelhouse.

Nuno Espírito Santo would be a pretty bright move. Would he leave Wolves for us at this juncture, I’m not sure. We appear to be on two different trajectories but I’m sure he’d see our club as a bigger opportunity in the longer term.

100% He was quite vocal on Sky earlier in the season how good he thought this squad was. He didn’t see the fissures beneath the surface at all.
I think that’s it. There are some serious problems with the mental aspect of this squad.

It makes me wonder if it’s a major flaw in Pochettino’s ideal player profile. Is it possible to be a good team player and overall good lad and have that winning mentality? Our squad just seem to be full of soft touches.

If he's to move to any club in England I'd hope it's that one. Couldn't bare to see him play for any other club in England but at least City aren't United, Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool. It would really hurt to see him play for them and win. I'd at least be happy for him if he won at City.

Hopefully it'll be Madrid though

NES is a good shout. I’m so, so sceptical over Wolves though. Personally I’m not sure how their transfers are entirely legal. Jorge Mendes basically runs the club. There’s no doubt whatsoever that he’s a significant factor in the success Wolves are having. That’s not to discredit NES, though.

Hard to separate NES and Mendes when it comes to Wolves tho. NES is good, no doubt, but they've had a conveyor belt of top talent via Mendes.

Nah. I don’t believe that Jordan Last Dance bulshit. Look at Liverpool, has Henderson turned from a nice guy into a winner through force of personality? No, just through a club with a plan and buying outstanding defenders.

FFS he has only come in!
Agree this one isn’t on Jose. The defending from the players individually was awful and that’s not down to Jose. Also I’m sorry but certain players just are not good enough. To name a few :
Aurier - goes to sleep too often
Sanchez - I wish he was I really do but he gets beaten far too easily time and again
Dier - he’s a good CB but he’s no where near the level toby & jan used to be
Davies- he’s an average full back nothing more
Sissoko - very average midfielder wouldn’t get in any of the teams above us currently we’ve known his limitations for a long time
Lucas - aside from a few good runs forwards he just doesn’t produce enough end product, there is a reason why PSG got rid of him

so that’s a good 6/7 out of our ‘best’ first XI who just aren’t up to it.

it’s rinse and repeat ever since levy / enic took over, wake up people.

Added to that, Sheff.Utd are a very solid team and we got mugged off for the Lucas decision as it’s a stupid rule and Norwood should’ve been sent off, but the mental fragility after we went 1-0 down was not good, 2nd half was very poor but it’s not as bad a result and performance as people are making out but the squad is a mess it’s not as good as Jose thought and that is as usual on LEVY/ENIC.

that being said I’m not 100% sure Jose is the right guy BUT it’s so early still in his time and we are in the table about where we should be with the quality of players we now have, that’s the truth of it.
