The coolest mutha we've ever had in charge at THFC; I'd have him back in a heartbeat...even if only to preside over team pics like this:

Is this an Adam and the Ants reunion?

He was not a bad manager but he didn`t suit Spurs... His system was all about controlling possession and getting your XFactor players to do some magic up front.. He had the players at Porto and they were a very good team.. In his first season we finished on 72 points which was a record for Spurs. However that second season the buying policy was awful and he definitely lost the players and so had to go. To be fair apart from the two amazing home games this season against Arsenal and Chelsea the football has not been great under Poch either..

Average manager who talked a lot of shit, played dull football and was incredibly lucky to have bale

All of this may be true but Bale was lucky to have AVB too. No manager has got as much from Bale as AVB did. His system allowed Bale to reach his his destructive best.

Bale says this himself.

I could see him as FIFA president. I think with his youth, his intelligence and willingness to shake things up are ideal qualities for leading a revolution at FIFA.

Bale elevated the entire team under both Harry and AVB.

I'd argue luka, vdv and Parker were more integral than bale bar a couple of champions league games under harry .

And avb made bale the the centre piece of the team tactically.

You could argue that Kane has given Poch the same advantage that Bale gave AVB. Both managers finished 5th but under AVB we were just a solitary point off 4th. Poch got us to a cup final but AVB took us further in the EL. AVB's 1st season was steady if unspectacular, a bit like the football the team played, but he almost got us top 4. His 2nd season was less impressive and a couple of spankings saw him fired, perhaps unfairly in hindsight when you consider the same thing happened to arse. Had we won one more game in AVB's 1st season we probably wouldn't be having this discussion right now.

More style than substance.

I would rather have an old and unfashionable manager like Martin Jol than boring AVB.

Bale dragged the whole team up on his own once those players had left. All quality players but Bale is the one that was sold for about £70M.

AVB didn't actually get fired, it was a mutual agreement to part ways. While that might be fired in anyone's book, I think AVB is an argumentative, stubborn and difficult person in high-pressure situations. If he doesn't get his exact way, he creates problems and falls out with people.

He recommended Baldini, but then when we got him in, by all accounts, didn't work with him well. Didn't work with Levy well and fell out with and isolated quite a few of the players.

His unprofessionalism and hissy-fits, like i keep saying, extended to giving our record signing and future investment, Lamela, his full debut, away to Man City. At the time the toughest game of the season.

He did this because he knew Lamela would struggle and he wanted to do an up-yours to Baldini, Sherwood and Levy, because we couldn't sign Willian or Hulk instead.

How he actually survived past this game and incident is beyond me but the writing was on the wall.

It was also a similar story at Chelsea, where he pretty much fell out with everyone over everything and threw his toys out of the pram just because he wasn't given total control over everything and allowed to sign whoever he wanted and do whatever he wanted.

Just not a manager that can manage or be a head coach at a big or even reasonably sized club, because he can't work under people that don't give him exactly what he wants whenever he wants it.

Agree totally, his handling of the Hugo incident and his inhability to handle the media pressure were also signs of his inexperience.

I just wonder how much it would have cost to be able to win consistently with AVB. You need athletic, mobile defenders that can play the high line, you need world class midfielders who can control possession, and then you have to have playmakers to support a great striker. You just just can't do that with a 6th place budget. But even more worrying than that was that AVB (and maybe this was more Baldini) had not shown any indication that his spending had gotten him any closer to his goal.

I think Poch is the ultimate Levy fit. His system obviously needs talent, but without talent, a massive 20 year old engine that can run for days can work. Those 20 year old engines cost far less than actually buying complete players.

No doubt that AVB was a bit of a pre-Madonna and could be difficult to work with. But the fact remains failing a diabolical linesman's flag at Stoke we would have got CL in his first season, finishing 2 points clear of arse. We'd probably have a different outlook on him if that had happened. We need video refs I think!
