If (Big if) we finished 3rd/4th and got into the CL proper, what would you estimate it would cost us in staff bonus' for getting to that point, then wage increases and buying players for the first season of CL football and help us get established in the top 4

Vs the amount that CL football brings in for a teams maiden season in that competition especially if we couldn't get a top four the following season does it mean Spurs would be able to get a TV channel for more revenue?

I like the way our club is run now there is no D.O.F, so would we increase our wage structure or would the lure of CL football be enough for most players? Remembering hopefully we have a stadium to pay for would we be hamstrung?

FWIW I have a feeling we'll end up 5th/6th as our record against the sky3 is such suggests we are mentally not right to get it, and this whole post is pointless  but i'd be interested to hear what peoples views are.

Hope that post makes some sense :shifty:

We are going to have a strong finish. Even the most apathetic comfort zone players are going to be in overdrive trying to impress due to the World Cup.

And Lennon will be back eventually and by then Modric will be back in his stride. We can only get better, esp with the new signings adding further options and depth.

CL football will get you most players I would have thought, though probably only after being in it for a couple of years. I may be wrong but I think we may have kept berbatov and certinly Keane MK1 if we'd made it under Jol... then who knows where we might be right now.

In terms of revenue, I think I read somewhere that its worth 20 odd million even if you do bugger all in it. Put simply, the team that wins the Europa league will earn less than a team knocked out of the CL in the first round..

I'm sure Levy is smart enough to handle this.
The clue is to not give players contracts that give them CL money every year,
but add bonuses that is activated the times we are qualified.

We would still need to win that playoff round as well. Guessing that we probably won't be seeded in the playoff draw since it would be our first CL, we might have to get though a Juventus possibly. Even Celtic or whoever finishes 3rd in Germany would be difficult.

I don't think we are going to get 4th now. Too many slip ups already. Will probably be Citeh or Liverpool.

Our run in is the toughest of all but by the time we get to it, we should have decent momentum as well as the belief derived from it. I would like to think we'll still be in the hunt.

Seeding is based on co-efficients, which is derieved from a clubs performance in europe over the last 5 seasons. Since we've done well recently we have a really good co-efficient and we should be seeded in the first round. This is why it's important for us to be in the Europa league if we can't be in the CL

Didn't they do away with the seeding for the play off game this season?

A lot depends on whether you start with the type of players who can consolidate their position in the top-4 the following season .

I don't think we have those players and consequently could not cope with the extra games and extra expectation .

Man City are able to buy those sort of players like Tevez .

At the very least we need our own Viera .

If we get really close the status quo will find a way of destabilising us or simply outspending us .

Edit : moneywise :-
- Need an extra £50m a year revenue to match wages of Arsenal and Liverpool . C.L. is supposedly worth £20m revenue . Going to have to find an extra £30m/year from somewhere .

- Net expenditure on player recruitment in advance of C.L. season of £60m+ (a Viera in the middle £30m , two top class strikers £50m minus £20m for disposals) .

There must be parallels with promotion from the Championship .

Some clubs like Sunderland have the money to invest heavily to try and stay up .

Other clubs like Sheffield United don't have sufficient money to throw at the problem so that enough of it sticks and accept it will not last .

I doubt whether we get CL football this year will make a big difference to the sort of players we can attract, we need to be in it consistently and getting to the knockout stages before we can attract truly world class players and be comfortable paying their wage demands.

However qualifying will make a HUGE difference to retaining current players who may look elsewhere come the end of the season if we don't make 4th. Winning some domestic silverware will also help with player retention

If we do qualify for CL, how much it makes us or costs us depends on how much Levy allows us to reinvest in players.

I really do not think we will top 4 finish. We really do not have the mentaility and strength to compete for that. I do think Man City or the Scousers will get that. I am hoping for a top 6 finish ... Hopefully we can get a great run in the cup !

That's something i hadn't considered until you mentioned it, i hope most are happy at the minute though.

I agree the mentality needs sorting out, maybe EG will be a big help with that, i would really like us to sign a Drogba type forward (minus the landmines) and an Essien type of midfielder.
