After reflecting on this game it worries me. We struggle to beat West Ham who basically played a full second string bar 3 players.
I know we won but we should be blowing away their second string.
Weird take. Big teams win by 1 goal regularly. Sometimes you have to grind out the victory, particularly when you're playing against a team who historically raise their game when they play us.

In a competition where goal difference doesn't matter, I couldn't give a fuck whether it was a 1-0 from an own goal as long as we won.

You do realise West Ham have been in top 4 contention for about 18months now, and those "second string players" comfortably won their euorpa league group and beat City and United in previous rounds?

You do realise we have just come back from massive covid outbreak and not been able to train for most of this time. Also we played a very hard and very intense game against Liverpool on Sunday. West Ham had 7/10 days break to prepare for this game.

Also this isn’t the old West Ham! Moyes has made them very hard to beat and kept them round top 6 for last 18 months.

2nd half was very Joseball , if anyone was going to score it was them. Sonny again very wasteful , no idea what’s up with him but the chance that Kane lays on for him - he has to at least test the keeper but that touch was just shocking .
It was like them JM times when we were under pressure and kept giving the ball back, however we had a very successful strategy to stop them going wide and getting crosses in (though they managed it a couple of times), they had to keep going back then try to switch to the opposite side, no can't get down there, back to the other side, no can't get down there other side again, no try to get the ball in the box from long, easily defended couldn't get a head on it. I'm sure we will work on keeping better possession and more control in these instances though.

The biggest disadvantage of course being how little time Conte has had with our squad compared to Moyes and West Ham. Personally I love what I am seeing - we are hurtling in the right direction, but there will still be bumps along the way

Totally agree with this! The commentators were making out like it was a barrage of West Ham chances but I literally can’t think of a clear cut chance they created all game other than their goal. They had no creativity and we were very solid
Tbf Lloris could have been MOTM with at least 3 top class saves, game could have gone their way or 2-2 or 3-3 or 3-1 to us. Was a very entertaining game for us and I'm glad we are back to being watchable and competitive.

I only watched the last 25 mins after stupidly agreeing to do the Xmas food shop last night (n)
They were camped in our half until the final whistle but we didn't look in any trouble at all, very compact and organised and quite comfortable.
Some might not have liked that we sat back and almost invited pressure, but I would class that as excellent game management, both from coach and players. We're in a hectic, exhausting run of games (3 days after a full on, helter skelter match) and what I saw last night was very controlled and frankly, very welcome. There is more than one way to get a result.

Declan Rice was superb last night. Nice touch at the end giving his shirt to a Spurs supporter too.

Totally agree. Those are the chances that kill games if you’re clinical with your finishing and Conte will be making this very clear to Son and co. We’ve been wasteful in front of goal of late and I think it’s only a matter of time before we dish out a real hiding to someone as we‘’be at least started to create ourselves some decent openings since Conte arrived.

He's literally the only thing I like about that club, and is currently the glue holding them together. I'm not usually one to hope the big teams scoop up all the talent, but I'll be delighted when one of City or United sign him.

Hopefully he'd consider a move abroad, he'd ruin La Liga midfields at will.

Expecting him to go to Chelsea, he's a massive Chelsea fan, has his mate Mount there and gets to stay in London.

Declan Rice and Harry Winks, had a nice chat and hug after the game. They seemed to have a bit of a 'mates' thing, going on...

The negative comments about the second half are a bit harsh. The drop in energy levels around the hour mark were stark. As Conte says the players have to suffer sometimes, and this is proving to be a very difficult time.

It was the first time I’ve been in the safe standing area and I really enjoyed it although my old legs were feeling it and it was bloody freezing. And I saw some old Spurs mates which was lovely so a good night.

I’m a bit concerned about Harry Kane, he was absolutely knackered in the last quarter of the game but its not breaking news that there’s nobody to cover him. Sonny has suddenly lost his outstanding first touch and Dier fed his critics with two bad mistakes leading to their goal.

Conte has them fighting hard, and you can’t ask for much more.

It was as I predicted a narrow win by a goal either that or on penalties. Whilst they didn't threaten that much they did have a few dangerous moments which on another day could have led to us conceding more than one.
I didn't like our tactics in the 2nd half and at times we were inviting unnecessary pressure. The substitutions temporarily worked.

I thought Kane had a poor game and his hold up play was particularly bad and Son didnt do much better when he came on. By sitting back against a team and inviting crosses from a team who are excellent at converting balls into the box into goals we rode our luck a bit too much for my liking.

They had a few key players missing and if they'd been available they could have been more of a threat. I will put our tactics down to not being able to to play yet with huge intensity for the whole 90 minutes or even 75 minutes, which when you factor in Covid recovery is hardly surprising. Pleased in the end to get a win in this one.

Conte is having to ration those miracles. He can only deploy so many in one week before the authorities start to get suspicious, and we used quite a few against Liverpool. Obviously he planned with Dier to throw one in the net to keep them off our scent.
