I really liked what I saw from Gil. They way he controlled the ball from their corner, setting up the attack for our first goal was fantastic. He also pressed a lot and made himself available time and time again.

However, his decision-making in the final third was far from great. And he got physically bullied and suffered from getting little support from our midfield, which seemed to really get to him towards the end of the half.

I feel like Ange did the right thing taking him off for PEH, but I also feel Gil would have had a great game against almost any other team than City (with Walker and sometimes Rodri against him).

Lo celso has literally performed way better than Gil the last two games thats why, theyve pretty much been thrown in together.

I actually think he has potential i thought the last two weeks hes looked ok, but at the same time we're not really looking for ok so i understand the doubts.
I think most fans are pleasantly surprised with GLC whereas Gil is pretty much what we expected.
Having said that I'm happy with an 'ok' winger. A squad-level player to fill some gaps. If he even gets to average PL level he would already justify the swap with Lamela.

The recurring issue I seem to face when judging Gil is, what are his strengths and what is his position in an Ange system?

Don't know if he fits the profile just yet.

Lamela would be a joy to watch under Postecoglu.

Maybe but I don't think he has enough minutes in him at PL level.
I love his never-say-die attitude btw..similar to Lucas Moura. Doesn't always do the right thing, but someone who will perform in adversity.

My pre match ratings were sorta, kinda, little bit prescient! 😂

Seriously though. In order of worst to best:
Biss
Gil
Skipp
Davies
Vic
Johnson
Emerson (frightening first half, excellent second)
PEH
Sonny
Udogie
Porro
Gio
Kulu

(not enough time to rate Richy or Donley)

Ange… got most things right today. But starting Gil over PEH, was in my very humble opinion a bridge too far on the risk scale. But credit to him… he course corrected at half time and we were a lot better.

Quick word on Haaland… what a little bitch, eh?

GK: Guglielmo Vicario - 7/10 - Made a few very good saves and, ultimately, could do nothing about the goals he conceded.

RB: Pedro Porro - 5/10 - A difficult task dealing with Doku on the day.

CB: Emerson Royal - 4/10 - It's fair to say that Emerson didn't enjoy being Vicario's first port of call when in possession.

CB: Ben Davies - 5/10 - Looked out of place at times in the middle of Spurs' defence.

LB: Destiny Udogie - 6/10 - Struggled to deal with Foden's movement in the first half, but got to grips with the game in the second.

DM: Yves Bissouma - 4/10 - Worked his socks off in the middle of the park, but so sloppy in possession at times and it cost his team in the final ten minutes.

DM: Giovani Lo Celso - 7/10 - Scored a brilliant goal to make it 2-2, and put in probably his best performance since his loan spell at Real Betis in 2019.

RM: Brennan Johnson - 7/10 - A constant threat with his pace on the break. Set up Kulu's goal with a great cross to the back post.

AM: Dejan Kulusevski - 8/10 - A very good showing from the Sweden international, who bagged an assist for the opening goal of the game and scored a thumping equaliser late on. He's really turned a corner since moving into the central attacking midfield role.

LM: Bryan Gil - 3/10 - The Spaniard just doesn't look up to the task at this level both physicially and technically. Rightfully subbed off at half-time.

ST: Heung-min Son - 7/10 - Scored at both ends of the park inside the opening 15 minutes. The Spurs captain made a lot of good decisions on the ball throughout the game, and was at the heart of everything good that his team did.

Substitutes

SUB: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (45' for Gil) - 6/10

SUB: Oliver Skipp (79' for Lo Celsco) - 5/10

SUB: Richarlison (87' for Bissouma) - 5/10

SUB: Jamie Donley (90' for Johnson) - N/A

Manager - Ange Postecoglou - 7/10 - Spurs were typically open in the first half, but a small tactical tweak at half-time from the manager really turned the game around for his side.

Man of the match: Dejan Kulusevski

I didnt watch the game, so im gonna ask an honest question.

Did we play Ange's style of football or Conteball?

Objective answers please.

The answers are in the last ten pages of the match day thread. Or the Red Cafe comments in the Opponents Fans thread.

Kulusevski was excellent throughout, but shines in that AM role. Such a good player.

I think it's easy to criticise the CBs, but they looked a lot better with Hoijberg around.

The two performances which were worrying were Bissouma, what has happened to him? He seems to have lost his mojo. Gil as well, did some good stuff, but he needs to improve his final ball and release it quicker, night and day with Johnson in the final 3rd.

Not many mentions, but Son did very well today, not just his goal, but he was good in possession. Also Hoijberg was very impressive when he came on, his passing is criminally underrated. The sub changed the game.

GLC was everywhere, getting involved and being a pain in the ass (for city).

And finally Johnson, he's got massive potential this lad. Really like him.

If we get everyone back we could have an incredibly strong end to the season. It's coming together.

One overall thing is the passion, you can tell everyone wants to be there and are fighting for each other.

I’m not writing him off. If he could match walker then he would be too good for us.
Just saying what I see. He’s not a CL level winger now. What he could be you never know. But the same can be said of most of our squad.
But we’re not in the CL?

Seriously Davies our 4th worst player. Sorry you must be on drugs 😅. He was a calming influence at the back especially in the first half when everyone else was making careless errors and his superb diving header set up the move for the second goal.

Amazing how people see things differently. I’m amazed at the high marks for Johnson for example. Yes he looked good going forward especially in the second half and put a great cross in for the 3rd goal but in the first half, especially, he was criminally negligent in the lack of help he gave Porro up against Doku. Watch the match again and see him slowly sauntering back while Porro is left one on one against Doku time and time again. If you’re a wide player a big part of your job is working back to help the FB especially when you’re up against a team as good as City with a winger as dangerous as Doku.
I’m also amazed at how little credit Davies got. He was as calm at the back as the eye of a storm especially in the first half when so many around him were making careless mistakes. Says everything about him and, to a lesser extent, Emerson that Haaland was kept so quiet. His diving header also set up the second goal. I gave him MOM. As is usual the attackers get all the plaudits but a CB pairing of 2 FBs did a great job against the best team in Europe.

Another great performance from Lo Celso and also Porro. Still think Kulusevski is better wide right even if I find his reluctance to use his right foot frustrating at times. He gave a great post match interview.
Unfortunately yet another below parr performance for Bissouma who oddly has been a shadow of the player he was before his sending off at Luton.
10/10 for Postecoglou for keeping the faith and instilling such belief and confidence in the squad. We’re on to something special with him in charge.

Which i cant bother reading, so thats why i asked here, if its not too much to ask
It was definitely Ange's style and even if it started off looking like it may lead to a beating, we still took the game to them, settled down and pretty much controlled the second half.
There were tweaks here and there, the defence weren't sitting on the halfway line all the time like the Chelsea game but without doubt, we have a way of playing now and won't compromise.

I wonder if that was a tactical plan with Gvardiol not likely to be the city defender who drops inside. Maybe keeping Johnson out there, stopped Akanji from roaming in to midfield as much as Gvardiol couldn't shuffle accross and leave Johnson.
Just something I was pondering.
BTW I too thought he didn't play very well and should have given more back up to porro

Gave it to Gio. Neck and neck with Deki really but Gio just made everything tick and I don't remember him putting a foot wrong. Fantastic goal and would have had an absolute belter of a second if not for a nick off Grealish (?). That was either going in or Emerson would have had to have made an incredible save, and some have bizarrely claimed he lacks power in his shooting!
