The importance of the loss of Dembele can't be overstated enough. He has never been properly replaced and we've not been the same team since. In my eyes, the most underrated player ever to grace the pitch.
Agreed, think we have started with Bentacur but he has a slightly different skill set but at least a level above what we have had since Dembele, maybe if Bissouma comes good that will help as well if we get the right manager

Yeah bet you anything Newcastle fans thought their squad was rotten to the core with an incurable losers mentality. Then Howe came in and completely turned their form around within a matter of months. Joelinton and Almiron went from punchlines to very decent players and now it looks like Sean Longstaff, Fabian Schar and Willock will soon be playing in the CL. And before people say "yeah but they've spent loads of money" - it's no more than we've spent in recent years and all players we probably could've attracted, and the turnaround started before most of them arrived.

In football this shit happens at clubs all the time.
I feel like lots of different debates have morphed into one.

I was only making the point that our players aren't all useless and a different coach maybe able to improve them and the tactics in which they're used.

I don't disagree that ENIC are an issue but that's not the argument , well I thought it wasn't.

That's exactly the point I was making too. Well, trying to at least.

The squad has issues but it's not completely useless/broken/rotten to the core, etc. The right manager, given a bit of time and some backing, can still get a lot out of this group.

IMO Conte was right six times a week and three times on Sunday. And I would suggest that instilling the right mentality isn't like flicking on a light switch, if you're going to fight against the whole culture of a club and change it, it's going to take time, it's not an exact science.
Like Ten Hag seems to have done pretty well at United

Mike McGrath reporting we’re leading the race for Maddison this summer. Adds more fuel to the idea they already know who their man is and are starting to plan. No chance we’re seriously looking at a ca. £50mil signing without knowing if the manager is on board. Especially without a DoF in place

My questions come more from a tactical point of view coupled with his short time in management and his limited experience of building a team for any prolonged period of time.

Tactically he is certainly on the right track and looks very promising and I like his version of the high press, in that he aims to trap opponents rather then push constantly but will press the back line hard when the right opportunity arises, but I have still seen tactical limitation especially to his attacking patterns that i think would get a lot more exposed in the PL then it does in Holland. There is intrinsically a lot of space given in the Eredivisie and teams don't tend to be so defensively minded. This is perfect for Slot who is at his best with fast passing around the corners and especially on a counter where he is excellent at exploiting that space when opposition players are out of position. Where he struggles tho is against teams that are more cautious and calculated when in and out of possession.

I've mentioned this before but again, if you look at those two highlights videos posted earlier as an example, you can see 90% of his attacking play goes via the winger and ends with a cut back or cross. Now this is very effective when the defence hasn't had time to set and space is in abundance but i'v seen him struggle when he is up against teams that don't allow that. He very visually seems to struggle with a plan B and in general looks to run out ideas on ways to counter that. He still tries to get the ball out wide but often it results with lots of passing around the box without very little end product save a long range shot. Of course the lack of a talented no 10 will not help but even if he had one i'm not sure the patterns would change.

Now considering he very evidently realised the areas of the Eredivisie to exploit then i'd hope he would be able to adapt to the PL in the same way but this is where questions of his personal experience do come into play for me. Having never spent any time ether as a player or a manager outside of Holland does make me question if that adaptation would come naturally, swiftly or at all. Obviously his success thus far in the European cups goes some way to alleviating my concerns in this regard and again why i'm so very curious to see how he fairs against Roma this time round.

Beyond that, the fact he hasn't had any experience building a team over any prolonged period of time makes the presence of DoF who is on the same page as him essential if we are to go for him. But really that is probably the case with any of the managers we are looking at but even in comparison to them he has very little experience in this regard. (Of course this might make him an even more attractive proposition for Levy as he probably wouldn't be unhappy with any of the players that get singed by him, it seems he is already trying to get us Maddison for example if todays reports are to be believed.) Plus he's never had to deal with a high pressure environment with a dressing room full of internationals. Yes being in a cup final is a pressure environment but i'm fairly sure the expectations for Feyenoord to win the cup or even the league were and are very low. After all his teams on the whole have been compiled of distinctly average talent. Now obviously that is very very impressive he's managed to do what he's done with the players he has had at his disposal but that does make the jump to us even larger. Would he have the mindset to bench Son or Kane (not that he will still be here next season) for example if they aren't doing what he is telling them or preforming to the required level?

Altogether he would certainly be in my top 5 options for us and there are certainly many things to really like about him, but i do feel he is certainly not the obvious choice for us currently and as i've said i'm surprised so many have chosen him as their clear favourite. I am inclined to agree with those i've talked to who live in Holland and follow the league religiously when they say he needs more time to develop before moving. But I guess there is a certain romanticism around the idea of his appointment that I get. And with all that being said, if he wins the Europa League he will go up greatly in my estimation, not to the point of going above Gailardo or Nagelsmann but still.

*And on another note, just a reminder, Feyenoord take on Ajax tonight at 7pm in the semi final of the KNVB cup, should be a good watch as although Ajax are stuttering a little at the moment despite being second (sacking your manager mid season can do that to you), they do like to play attacking football so it should be an end to end game.
Very good informed post.
Also enjoyed reading the article on Gallardo’s assistant coach you linked awhile back aswell👍

One of the more reliable papers in Portugal had us in for Ugarte also. Seems like we will be going three in the middle.
I really hope we go for Alex Scott even if we loan him back for a year. (Apparently he is a Spurs fan)

Would LOVE Alex Scott. Would support selling Bissouma/PEH to open up playing time for him & Sarr.

I honestly think Luis Enrique is the worst possible appointment, I would love it if Chelsea appointed him.

People go on about his Barca team, but that team was phenomenal, I don't think they even needed a coach. He only got the job because he was ex barca in the first place.

He has done nothing since or before that is worthy of recognition and has only a stint at Roma 10 years ago working outside of Spain.

We haven't got the best squad, we need a manager that can work magic with whatever he is served. That is not Enrique. Get me a manager that has been working magic with lesser teams.

Harry won the FA cup with Portsmouth, Poch revolutionised that Southampton team. Slot doing it at Feyenord is massively more impressive for me than any of the other candidates.

Winning the league with Barca or Celtic or PSG or Bayern is nothing. Call me when they do something special with a lesser team. Like Feyenoord
He got the Barca job at the right time. They still had the established top players like Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta but with the front 3 of Messi, Neymar and Suarez who got over 100 goals per season between them. I think he could do well in a team of top players so might be good for Chelsea but not a good fit for us. I'm not sure he's one to develop youth as well as he is working with top quality. I think that's maybe where people put him in the same boat as Conte and Jose.

Do you actually believe that we wouldn’t buy a player without the agreement of a manager?

That’s the exact thing that’s got us into this situation in the first place.

We won’t be paying 20+ million to loan him back for a year. I can assure you we đôi not be doing that…

With his contract expiring in a year I would reckon the fee won't be more than £30 million + add ons, but Madders would be a good signing for pretty much any manager. Very versatile player.

Pretty well? They had a decent spell at the right time, but then again so did Conte.

United have had a lot more than one abject performance under Ten Hag, including a seven goal thrashing. But Conte has gone and this really is a fuck-all and pointless argument about degrees of this and that now, but we can't help ourselves I suppose.

It's over and we await the crowning of the next poor bugger :D

Hi welcome to the wonderful world of Tottenham Hotspur where we absolutely would do that as long as we feel we can make a profit from it

And now they haven’t scored a goal in 3 Hames in the league and look awful defensively without Casemiro.
I read they’re behind in points this season compared to last season.

Have you learnt nothing in the last 20 years? It won't be that much with 1 year left anyway.
