Personally, would love JWP. Always been impressed by him. Excellent ball delivery and work rate. And if it was to replace Winks… *chef’s kiss*
He covered the most distance in the league last season and it wasn't close! I think he's started something like 80+ matches in a row for Southampton. Guy is unreal outside of his ability to deliver a free kick.

Would love to see JWP, depending on the price (wouldn’t want to go north of 30m). He’d make a rotation option for cups/late in matches to capitalize on set pieces. If we’re thinking in terms of the latter (which we should - I think we could next an extra 3-5 goals with better set piece takers/routines), that would also explain our interest in Pjanic.

Dybala should have been our answer here, though.

I'm not sure I've fully wrapped my head around the homegrown rule for Uefa competitions but by my count we could well be short of HG players unless we want to register fringe figures such as Clarke or CCV, or make promotions from the academy to the first-team squad.

Davies and Rodon are not classed as homegrown in Europe and Doherty is supposedly not HG due to his loan stint in Scotland. Of the players currently listed in the first-team squad on the official website, that leaves the following as HG registrants for the Conference League: (1) Kane, (2) Winks, (3) Sessegnon, (4) Dele, (5) Tanganga, (6) Skipp, (7) Whiteman, (8) Clarke, (9) CCV.

We've got to register eight of those (or promote youngsters from the academy to fill their spots) or else we'll not be able to register a full compliment of 25. When you consider that Kane may well be going to City, Winks has been strongly linked with a move, CCV will almost surely be sold, Clarke is in need of a loan, and Tanganga has been linked with a loan as well, we do have a HG problem brewing.

All of this depends on who leaves the club, obviously, but you can see why Paratici would be weighing up HG options. And they're all going to cost us massively above market rate when you take into account the financial health of PL clubs vs. that of clubs on the continent. We'd have to pay over the odds for JWP, yes, but the same would be true of any player from an English club.

Having a full homegrown quota is only an issue if you intend to have a full 25 man squad to be fair. The bigger issue is having more than 17 non-HG players.

I do like the link to Noni Madueke for that reason however.

While true, we've had ITK that we're in for four more players (five if Kane goes) and that we're finding it hard to shift our deadwood.

All I'm saying is that there are permutations, depending on who leaves and who doesn't leave, where we may want to be bringing in homegrown players, in which case we'd almost by definition need to pay over the odds. Comparing JWP's cost to what we'd be able to get from abroad has to take that into account.

I think he’s very underrated & would be a great signing if we got the money available, even at 30-35 Million. Unlucky not to get picked for England this year which would have added more value.

He’s obviously a set piece specialist, which is much needed & automatically brings more goals to team. He’s always fit, never misses games and has great all round attributes for a CM and I feel he would fit in really well at spurs.

Ideal scenario would be a player swap plus cash, with Winks and/or Dier going to Southampton.

You know that means we will sign him, and he will consistently fail to beat the first man on corners, and subsequently become injury prone

This is a "link" that makes no sense - to me.

All of the other players we have been linked to have been from clubs in financial distress, where we could find value. There is no value in signing a HG talent, from a PL club.

It also does not really fit the profile of the type of CM we would be looking for to play in Nuno's 433.

This "link" feels more like its from Soton, or an agent, trying to create a competitive market - and not a real target of Paratici.

Always found JWP a bit meh, apart from his set piece work, yes he is probably better than winks or Sissoko, but for the money being rumoured I would suspect the Don can find better value elsewhere.

Hope he has got a gentleman’s agreement because he is under contract for another 4 years and Soton don’t need the cash.

I think he would be a great signing, similar to when Liverpool signed milner.
Infectious hard working attitude, always chomping at the bit to play and has a solid technique.
Edit: at the right price. 20m max for me

Some of you seriously underestimate him comparing him to Winks. Ward Prowse would be the kind of signing that after a few months he's one of the first names on the team sheet. Similarly to Højbjerg.

In short, I'd love this signing, but can't see it happening due to the hefty price.

In UEFA you have to think about club trained as well so let's say we end up with 0 registered, club trained players, we could at most register 21 players in the squad. I doubt that would be an ideal situation.

JWP is obviously good but I don't think he's a significant enough upgrade to warrant the outlay on him (40m is a lot) as a replacement to Winks who has more or less identical numbers in open play, and is also club trained.

I also think JWP would unfortunately be the kind of signing that fans have an issue with after 6 months, and clamor for a new shiny 60m signing instead.
