The whole back to Ajax thing is a completely made up thing. I think people jumped a million miles to conclusions after some nothing PR answers Toby gave about the club when we played them in Chmps Lge.

Aside from making no sense for Toby wanting payday, it would also go against just about everything ajax is about building youth for the future.
Nah, they like a returning player (see Blind), and I think Toby is open to returning and ending his career there. It's just the narrative doesn't fit.

I'm not saying other clubs might not go for it, I'm saying this whole back to Ajax on a free thing doesn't make sense with the idea that he's holding out for a big pay day.

I didn't think so either until you run the numbers. They could give Toby a €22M signing bonus and pay him €60K a wk over three years and he'd gross the same as if he signed for €200K over three years.

They just made €130M+ on FdJ and MdL. They have plenty of money and further sells next year.

That offer is probably his floor. He could receive a more lucrative offer from a larger club.

Lads, if anyone wants a lesson in just how fucking little most of us know about football, take yourself back to page one of this thread and see the utter shite that was posted about Toby's ability as we saw it before he signed for us.

Seems as slow as Fazio from what I've seen. If we're going to play a high line we need quick defenders. He isn't quick.

I don't particularly see what he'd bring. He's quite good at most things defensively, but doesn't particularly excel at anything.

Not getting too much of a boner from this guy. Put Fazio in a team that defends in a low block with Schneiderlin and Wanyama in front of him, and he'd probably look pretty impressive.

He is slow, he is made to look better than he is, benefiting from a very well cooperating entity, he wouldn't survive a day in Pochettino's hazardous high messing – I mean pressing – and there is an abundance of better names we should be pursuing.
Brutal. Makes me wonder what were the early observations of Kane

They may like a returning player if they are Dutch and they can pay them peanuts. Either way, it ain’t gonna happen.

How can anybody in their right mind blame him? If?! He fancies after his term is up, we agree a lucrative signing on fee. Or elsewhere he goes. I don’t blame him one iota.

I think it's relevant too that his father is his agent.
A chunky agents fee as part of the free transfer is more money going to the family.

Must be weird though going into work for years for half of the money you could have earnt, even if you think you can make it up later.

Either way, glad he's still here.

Absolutely! Transfer fees were originally designed as compensation for breaking a contract. Not a value of the player. If he sees out his contract, then he’s done his side of the agreement we signed him on. Not sure why players who see out their contract get so much grief.

Big gamble running down your contract at over 30, one serious injury and the plan goes out the window

I'm not entirely sure I understand this?

But all I can say is that, whatever has happened at the club, Alderweireld has, at least publicly, been completely professional and played and behaved like he's loved the club.

I'm intrigued to read the book about this one, one day.

Good luck to him, 1 more year with us and then he goes is fine with me, we lost 25 mill but gained him for another year. Probably the best outcome if he doesn’t want to sign a new contract.

Thought for sure we would lose him at £25m. Now if we do lose him, at least it should be for a lot more, but really want him with us at least one more season.

Sorry its hot and maybe i'm missing something...

If no one bought him at 25m , how on earth are we gonna get alot more now?

The way i see it is he is staying, not signing for us or anyone else ,and going on free next season, probably back to Ajax.

I'm not sure why people are surprised. Spend one more season at a CL club where he is happy and both him and his dad will pocket best part of £10m each + double his current wages when he moves on a free next year. Instead of wondering why he is staying it's easier to ask why would you go now?

This....all day.

I think the poster just didn't include the bracketed words in their sentence: "Now if we do lose him [this summer], at least it should be for a lot more".

But yeah, it looks increasingly likely that we'll have Toby playing for us in the 2019/20 season and then the chances are that he will move on a free transfer to a club of his choice next summer.

Hang on , are we saying interested clubs waited until the 25m clause expired so they get quoted more by Danny this summer?

Again am i missing something here? it sounds insane.

Yep, you're missing something for sure. :playful: All that's being said is that if we were to lose Alderweireld this summer (which both you, I and most other sentient beings think is not very likely at this point), then due to the expiration of the release clause presumably any sale this summer (again: highly improbable) would likely be for more than £25m because Levy would be unlikely to sell Toby on anything other than his own terms, despite his deal expiring next year.

Have another beer. :D
