Sorry its hot and maybe i'm missing something...

If no one bought him at 25m , how on earth are we gonna get alot more now?

The way i see it is he is staying, not signing for us or anyone else ,and going on free next season, probably back to Ajax.

Doubt he'll go to Ajax. He might even sign a new deal with us if we offer him good enough terms. We've got as much chance as anyone else as it stands.

Yep, you're missing something for sure. :playful: All that's being said is that if we were to lose Alderweireld this summer (which both you, I and most other sentient beings think is not very likely at this point), then due to the expiration of the release clause then presumably any sale this summer (again: highly improbable) would likely be for more than £25m because Levy would be unlikely to sell Toby on anything other than his own terms, despite his deal expiring next year.

Have another beer. :D

Hang on , no beers yet mate, i get all that ,what i don't get is that we think there is an interested club out there that has waited for the 25m clause to expire to be left at the mercy of negotiating with DL, that's my point......and the answer is zero clubs imo, no one is interested in Toby now, surely not.

Maybe a few were, no one knows for sure, maybe Toby refused the offers, maybe he always intended to see out his contract and go on a free next season..., but as we speak i would think anyone coming in for Toby now needs sectioning!!! utter madness.

ELY I think the first sentence is hypothetical and that, now his release clause has expired, if somebody was really needy and wanted him then it would cost more because of the expired clause.

Surely if Toby is adamant hes leaving at the end of his deal and it certainly looks to be the case, then the clause expiring is pretty much meaningless? Another team would be well within their rights to come in and offer £25m all the same as its the most we're ever going to get for him? Of course its nice to be able to choose whether we accept that or not but purely from a business perspective it would make sense to get the most for a depreciating asset which at this point Toby very much is.

I haven't checked just now, but I did look into it previously (as much as the Internet can be trusted on such matters), and I'm pretty sure that £150k p/w would put him in the top 5 earning CBs in the world. That's an extremely competitive offer.

Yes, but he's hoping that as a free-agent he can get a 10-15m signing-on bonus which makes a much bigger difference than a few 10s-k/week here versus there for someone towards their end of their career

Which he'd have probably earned by now if he'd accepted our original deal, without the drama. Football is strange.

Yes seems so weird ,mebbe he's been badly advised . Dad as manager I believe . Overall perhaps he's left it a year or two too late . 31 and a free agent , not as juicy as 29..

Roma are in huge debt so no way can they afford to completely write off the best part of £50m on a CB with no resale value (fee and 125k wages for 3 years at a minimum). Probably why they thought maybe they can get some money and Toby for Zanilo and make the best of a bad situation. At least this other chap is only 23 so they can recoup something further down the line.

I expect Toby to be lining up first game, I'd be fine selling Rose and Trippier, using that money for Sessengon (with a bit of change for Lo Celso) and starting the season with 2 of Aurier/KWP/Foyth and Davies/ Sessengon as fullbacks, providing we keep the core of Toby and Jan. Unless an opportunity for a real proven upgrade (Digne) comes about
Sess not good enough at fullback yet.. Rose needs to stay

Maybe other clubs look at him as we did (at the start of the thread). He's slow, can make mistakes, and hardly ever scores. He needs at least one good quality DM in front of him.
Add to that perhaps that he is a much better player as part of the team with his long term partner Vertonghen. On his own... not so much.

Just maybe ManU genuinely rate Maguire as X3 the player Alderweireld is.

Of course we don't see things that way (any more), but we wouldn't would we?

Big clubs just rarely buy old defenders. Look across Europe.. Barca, Madrid, Bayern, City, United, PSG, Pool, etc all go for players around 25 or under.

Toby is very rarely chasing down any attackers. That’s what makes him so good. His positional awareness is fantastic.

100%, class player, but has seemed to be getting caught out more regularly towards the end of last season and friendly the other day.

edit: poor goal scoring record, too

It’s just pre season and he’s most likely not up to speed/full fitness yet. I remember last season when he had time out through injury then returned and looked terrible first game against lower league opposition in a domestic cup game.

Towards the end of last season we had Trippier beside him who was awful and exposed our defence. We also didn’t have an out and out defensive midfielder shielding our defence. Dier/Wanyama constantly injured and the only real protection they had was Sissoko for large parts of the season.

I’ll be intrigued to see how he plays with a decent midfield in front of him now. Let’s hope we see the trademark Toby long ball to Alli reappear for what is looking like his last season with us.

I agree to a point but dont forget he hasnt had a a really good right back since Walker... all defenders need help... When you have Tripps, Foyth, Aurier and KWP all making mistakes regularly it puts a great deal of pressure on Toby to then cover both areas

Toby isnt the quickest but his awareness and anticipation is top notch.
