It was my first Wembley final watching Spurs play there - Too young and/or too poor to watch the 1960's cup final trips, couldn't get a ticket for the 1971 LC final either.
.
I'd been at the 1972 two legged EUFA Cup final vs Wolves but this Wembley final was my moment.. Have to say a bit of an anti-climax but mustn't grumble - our Ralphie getting the winner. I think I saw 52 matches that season, my first year of full time work and money in my pocket.

my first boy is called Ralph! pure coincidence :)

I see we scored and then sat back under a barrage of pressure - nothing changes! :)

Ah, yes - the days when you got given a 'ballot' card at the turnstile (usually a mid-week game) a few weeks before the Final and took your chance.

On such occasions I used to leave my regular spot in the Park Lane early to mingle with the away fans and hassle them for their ballot cards: - worked a treat I seem to remember, getting enough tickets for me, my bro and my dad to both the '71 and '73 Lge cup finals.

I always get a shock when I see Stevie these days. In my mind I still see him at that feisty 17 year old. Looking at him nowadays reminds me of how old I am.
I never saw him play in the flesh, sadly - I'm a bit too young. But I have a bit of of special affection for him because of his Spurs appearance record. He aged remarkably well until he had the heart surgery. Other then the colour of his hair, he still looked as fresh-faced as his younger days.

My introduction to English club football came around this time, when our new fourth tv channel came to town. It was PBS - Public Broadcasting - which featured mostly documentaries and educational stuff; but which also would occasionally televise cup games. The Road to Wembley it was called.

Anyway, literally my earliest recollection of English football are of watching Ralph Coates with Spurs. Or more specifically, his hair. Professional sportsmen over here (the States) did not look like that. Interest in 'soccer' over here at that time (for a kid my age, anyway) was a fairly solitary pursuit, but I'd been riveted by the World Cup and international footy in '70 and after, and when this (club football) showed up on my screen, I was fascinated. Flash forward some 45+ years, and the time and money I've spent on Tottenham Hotspur FC doesn't bear thinking about. And if I'm honest, I don't really know how it all came to be. I don't remember the opposition. I don't remember the result. But I do know that it started with Ralph Coates.

Weird.

About 12 years ago was doing my coaching badges for youth football
held at west hams youth set up ( I know don’t get me started but live near by)
Ralph coates was doing some inspirational talking
All the young coaches with me didn’t know who he was but being about 50 at the time was one my idols along with many others
Got talking to him afterwards he was so chuffed A that I was a Spurs supporter in the middle of enemy territory and B that I remember the League cup final
He could stop telling how he set up Big Chiv ! For the Goal
A Genuine nice Guy who we sadly lost a few years ago

Same here - 11 years old and my first final but remember it like it was yesterday with the ubiquitous silk scarf tightly knotted around my wrist! sitting on a wooden bench to the side of the 18 yard box!

One was Norwich one Villa - is that right?
I was at them both all I remember is one was really boring and bloody freezing.
You cannot be serious about the Wolves game probably best night of my Spurs life and Wolves played well it was no walkover.

While writing this I realised for the first time - that means we won silverware 3 seasons running.
It had never occurred to me before this thread. Spurs were always there abouts for something in those days.

I played against Ralph a good few years later scored a goal in that game from just outside the area and slightly to the left curled it into the far top corner - Ralph complemented me on that goal I shan't tell anyone if it was meant to be a cross - it looked good though

You misread/misunderstood what I was saying about the Wolves EUFA Final over two legs. May 1972 I was still a schoolboy then, we sneaked out of school at lunchtime and went up on the rattler to Molyneux, that away end was ram packed with Spurs that night. Said many times on this and other forums how great it was. One of life's great nights - The Wembley experience was my first taste of those finals, but the game was not that great apart from winning. It was to be the last trophy until 1981 and beyond with a dip into Div 2 but that's another tale for another day.

yes I heard that too. There was a time before Liverpool made it there own. Shame other clubs don't highjack it back. It's an amazing anthem that gets the hairs up every time, if I'm honest.

Plenty of teams did the YNWA - There was even a staccato version of it sung on the terraces.
.
A Liverpool/Kop clip made it onto the Pink Floyd album "Meddle" in 1971 as part of the 'Fearless' track, a snippet coming in at 4.40 on the vid.

.
That was before the days of Liverpool fans being total arseholes.
