Congratulations to Bale. Was an outstanding player at his prime. His ability to single handledly change a game from anyway on the pitch, in the dying minutes of the game, was remarkable. The year we first qualified for the Champions League, where he started to realize he could do almost anything, was a joy to behold. And was quite literally unstoppable in that final season for us. What happened next in his career was he won a record amount of trophies for a British player, earned enough for many generations of his family, but never quite got the respect he deserved. Part of that was the context in which he was dropped - Ronaldo’s narcissism and unwillingness to bring him into the fold. Part his own fault - “Wales, golf, Madrid”, and the general sense that he never settled in Madrid. But a highly successful career regardless with many important goals at Madrid. Still, you’re left with a sense of what could have been.

When he returned to us, once he got used again to the pace of the Premier League, I thought he was outstanding. He was excellent at dispatching mid-table and lower table opposition with his excellent shooting, timing of runs and instinct in the box. It really was a shame Mourinho did not use him enough.

he’ll forever be a Spurs legend for me.
Yeah Bale's ascendance is about as remarkable as any player I can remember, Spurs or otherwise.

In the space of a single season he went from a running joke to a truly top class winger - it was absolutely amazing to witness.

One of the best players I've ever seen to don our colours and I maintain that his 12-13 season is as good an individual season as any player has ever had in the Premier League. Certainly the best goal montage, anyway.

Magical player.

Hearing of big name players whom you've followed all the way from their teens retiring at the same age I am really drives it home doesn't it

Starting to think that my time has run out to become a world class athlete..

Brings a tear to mine eye. To think that he’d have retired before Modders is just crazy. What a career he’s had… I will never in my life forget those two European nights vs Maicon, and of course his 12/13 masterclass. I love Kane but I feel that peak Bale is the best player we’ve ever seen hold the shirt. He was as good as anyone in the world that year.

such a shame what’s happened at Madrid, though the injuries were the real villain in the story imo. Still, an absolute legend and a hero who has cemented his place in history beyond any shadow of a doubt.

Seems too young to retire, but i guess injuries taken their toll so can't be the explosive player he was...He did it all though, so no regrets i'm sure....just wish he'd got a proper trophy with Spurs (not sure he'd count '08)

What a player...and what a career.

As a Welsh Spurs fan I was priviliged to witness this legend numerous times playing for our Club and my country.

The AVB season where he seemed to score a last minute winner every week.

The Swansea away game where he scored a cracker (when I was sitting in the home fans area ?).

France 2016. Being in Lille when we beat Belgium.

Diolch Gareth ?

664 games for club & country - very decent amount

His performances in finals and his success abroad & silverware say he’s the greatest british player of all time

Probably my favourite goal was his injury time goal against the Spanners when he’d been kicked up in the air, got up, received the ball and then pinged a winner into the top corner. Great strike like an arrow (he had the most incredible technique) and I love a last minute winner against them.

A player that was in some ways underrated by Real Madrid fans but arguably the best British export of all time and who got you out of your seat in his prime.

Much love.

Also remember his part in one of my favourite Spurs goals, Van der Vaart vs. Villa away in 2010. First goal here:

Everything good about that team was encapsulated in that goal and overall match. Down to 10 men, still dominated, scored two lovely goals.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid continue to prove why they and their various propaganda arms are completely grotesque:

I feel privileged to have seen him (amongst others) at Spurs. My favourite player? Probably not, I don't know, nor, to quote myself elsewhere on here, care.

There has been a conveyor belt of true greats at the club - unfortunately not all at the same time. Harry is our new superstar - will we ever land or develop another one? I fear not :( For those who think we should be buying the finished article instead of taking chances then look at the players we have had playing for us in the past. For the opportunity to have watched them then I'm grateful.

At the time when he was battling to go to Madrid, I thought he was a **** but you know, time is whatever. He was simply superb and I did witness one of the best hattricks live at the San Siro which, even though we lost, made it a worth while journey.

Great great player. One of the best and at one point, just behind Ronaldo and Messi.

I also became a Wales fan because of him!
