It benefits their chairman to make this seem drawn out.
Appear as though he’s played hardball and taken every cent that Levy has. It’ll play well with the Lyon fans.
It looks better than him saying, the player asked to leave and there’s only one club interested in paying a reasonable fee.

If there’s already an agreement in place and he’s due for a medical, what is the point in Aulas coming out and saying this? it’s not like he’ll get any more money out of us

From a OL supporter on reddit:

"Yes, but he can't and won't say anything before July 1st. Now, Ndombele is as good as gone, and it's highly likely he goes to Tottenham, a club which also corresponds to what Ndombele would want to get a shot at playing the Euro.

We're publicly traded, so he can't just say BS. And the fiscal year ends on June 30, and we already have positive net results for 2018-2019 year thanks to Mendy's sale / CL qualification. So we want to move Ndombele's sale to the 2019-2020, so that we are pretty sure to have another positive net fiscal year. "

It's all PR from Aulas designed to make out that he's squeezed every last penny from us to get the fans onside

No, but perhaps he thinks Lille might now try to get more money out of them for Thiago Mendes?

I don't think it's effective, but that's probably his thinking.
