I do have my doubts when it comes to Poch and his ability to judge forwards, Llorente, Janssen and Osvaldo before them. Now I actually think Llorente was a very good forward when we got him, just completely wrong for our system. Was so glaringly obvious to anyone who had seen him play even once in his career. But the others....Janssen was his recommendation!!!
Not to split hairs but Llorente was definitely a Levy appropriation. He'd been ogling the big boy for years.I do have my doubts when it comes to Poch and his ability to judge forwards, Llorente, Janssen and Osvaldo before them. he probably was, but I'm sure Poch signed off on him. I just feel he was so clearly wrong for us that even if we needed a forward we should not have got him. I would have understood were he English maybe, just for the home grown thing. Anyway, I won't go on about Llorente as I don't want to derail the thread. Not to split hairs but Llorente was definitely a Levy appropriation. He'd been ogling the big boy for years.
Right, and that's a big concern, because it's far from unlikely that we'll have to replace one or two key players next summer, and we don't seem capable even of refreshing the squad at the moment.January windows are generally for bargains - like Lucas, players who are good but out of favor in their current club, or out of contract in the summer - or teams that are desperate. Teams fighting to avoid relegation are desperate. Teams at the top of the table are rarely desperate.
So, I don't think this window says anything about where we are in terms of need to improve. We have needs, but overpaying to address those needs is not really a viable option. If we bought a world-class CM, for example, we are still outsiders in the title race. Maybe we catch a lucky break, maybe we don't. But, its a big spend, and it might leave us exactly where we are right now. I am not going to lose any sleep over a failure to buy this month.
Now, next summer is a different story. We have some aging players that will need to be phased out over time, and just general freshening up at some spots. We had that same need last summer, and, if we don't make in the summer of 2019 - we are officially in trouble...
Don’t want to compromise myself. Let’s just say, don’t blame that as the scouts faults. There is also a risk ratio analysis given on every recommendation.
I seriously doubt we can find another manager in world football who can give the added value to our club that Poch has, so we also can't assume that our current level is sustainable if he ever gets tempted away by a club that can offer him greater resources.

We will pay for the right players the problem is finding players Poch wants that will come to us. Poch obviously only wants top end players now, and unfortunately they are converted by Europe's elite. He is adamant he doesn't want players just to fill a gap because we can't move them on when better becomes available. If we buy players he isn't convinced on we then get stick for not backing the manager. It will be his choice if we get no one, because the ones he wants are not obtainable. It is very AVB-esque in a way, but at least the club are backing him in the fact we won't go for other people's options instead.
I thought the problem is persuading them to join, not the salary etc.If Poch only wants top end players now, and we're not prepared to pay for them, the only avenue it's going to open is an escape route for Poch to United. Not being able to sign the players he wants will teach him that he'll need to manage elsewhere in order to get them.
Do you honestly think that the whole story is persuading them to join?I thought the problem is persuading them to join, not the salary etc.
You think we have more pull than Barca and Real?Do you honestly think that the whole story is persuading them to join?
Nope, but I doubt that's where they'll all be off to.You think we have more pull than Barca and Real?
It possibly was last minute, but would make 0 sense if it was due to Balde. He's a LWF who can sometimes play as a second striker. You could be right tho, I don't really remember exactly how it happened, but I do remember Balde wanting Juve all summer then settling for Monaco. Would be concerning if Llorente was considered a Balde alternative.Wasn’t he last minute after keita baled fell through?
That so called expert of French football we have should have been sacked after those two signings.Don’t want to compromise myself. Let’s just say, don’t blame that as the scouts faults. There is also a risk ratio analysis given on every recommendation.
Hitchens joined in Feb of 2017. Nkoudou was bought summer of 2016 and Njie the summer before that. That so called expert of French football we have should have been sacked after those two signings.
I 100% agree but the problem we face is that Daniel Levy clearly believes that the only irreplaceable person st the club is him and that he doesn’t need to spend the necessary money to keep Poch. I have no doubt that he believes if Poch leaves he can find another coach who can keep us in the CL places while spending nothing. The real issue in Poch’s comments today is that ENIC don’t share his or the fans ambition to win things, they just want the money from CL qualification.Losing Poch would be one of the biggest disasters I would have experienced in my 37 years of supporting Tottenham. He’s irreplaceable at the moment. More than any other manager, he deserves to be backed, even if it means some restructuring of the business model. He’s loyal and honourable but also ambitious; at some point in the next 6-8 months, we need to show serious intent by acquiring one or two of his players. He’s saved us countless millions by developing raw talent into very good/outstanding players, and earned the club big money by consistently qualifying for the Champions League.
If ever there was such a thing as a sensible gamble, it would be to back this man
