The England wicket-keeper is out - of the closet that is, having admitted he is gay.

There have been quite a few similar revelations from sporting figures recently but are we all that bothered and should it make headline news? In this day and age, is it a problem? I don't think sexual preferences should or do matter in sport.

(No jokes about sticky wickets please!)

It only makes headlines as thats all the media are interested in now - gossip. He's a very good 'keeper, his sexuality isn't relevant at all, but then again, neither was Justin Fashanu's and look what happened there - even his own scumbag of a brother was interviewed saying it was wrong and he'd not be able to change in the same room as him, etc.

Whilst every other facet of human existence has done it's usual trick of "accepting" someones sexuality by highlighting it at every given opportunity, to illustrate as hypocritically as they possibly can how we shouldn't treat them differently or make an issue out of it.

What gets me though is who is this news aimed at? Is it aimed at other gay sports participants/fans who find comfort in knowing other are gay too, or is it aimed at homophobes who can now file this particular individual into their "sodomiser" catagory? Why do "news"papers need to carry this stuff when it is literally of no relevance whatsoever with regards to the individuals reason for being in the public eye in the first place?

Peoples sexuality is not news.

The former, I would imagine. Davies said that Gareth Thomas coming out helped him a lot.

But hopefully the press don't go on about this forever.

I guess it's newsworthy because the player himself decided to come out and make a fuss about it.

Personally I think they should all go ahead and come out so that sports fans (whether ok with it or not) will get used to it and self imposed hiding in closets is no longer the norm.

I have no feeling on homosexuality and anyway what relevance is it to the thread?

Nobody is stopping gayers from coming out other than themselves. There are thriving gay communities all over and all these people came out so what's different about sport stars? Other celebrities have come out and they aren't being hounded for doing so.

I would have thought homosexuality was the whole point of the thread!

I only ask because a lot of people consider sport to be a macho, male environment amd it seems footballers for one feel this way. I just wonder how a lot of football fans would feel if their heroes were taking it up the poop shoot.

I thought the thread was more about people coming out than homosexuality itself.

I'm still of the opinion gay sports people should just go ahead and come out so the fans get used to it sooner. It worked alright for actors and musicians so why not sports people?

I'm not sure how I'd feel about a team mate coming out. I'd probably feel defiled that he came out after the fact of sharing a team shower with everybody. He may not of fancied me at all or anybody else on the team but if I were in a shower with a bunch of women and didn't fancy any of them I'd still take a look at their bits and pieces...

^ Not sure about the last para, but I otherwise agree. I just think that the problem is some of the type of people who follow football would be mericiless in their hounding of the first few players who came out. But then I suppose someone has to do it a first time.....

I wonder how many who read these boards actually have any idea of who Justin Fashanu was, or why, despite being an outstanding player, he was unable to find a team to take him on after he "came out"

Commited suicide if I recall (without clicking the link)?
Yeah, accused of sexual assault on a lad over in the US. I don't think much has changed at all - granted, some managers would be more understanding than Cloughie, but i doubt that much has changed behind the curtains in footballing circles.

The hokey-cokey
it's as if the producer of the camera crew said, "Can you all go and do something really gay, to illustrate just how gay you are?"

Eric Hall doesn't do himself any favors either - what a cock

(Apologies to anyone who just googled 'monster cock' and were hugely disappointed when they found this thread)

In an age where footballers are putting cell phones up their bums and whatnot and doing their best to dress similar to the gay crowd (eg Ronaldo) that those too afraid to come out have perhaps misjudged their team mates

I doubt it. And they've definitely not misjudged the fans.

Fans are fans and are always going to look for something to chant about. Tim Howard gets the occasional shit for having Tourettes, Rooney for being a granny shagger, Terry & A Cole for being all round ****s, and so on. It's part of the territory of being a footballer that opposing fans will look for something to put you down with. You know how Howard, Cole, and Terry shuts the fans up? They play well, do their job, ignore the fans, and get on with winning for the real fans.
