Stellini needs credit too - dropping Son is quite a big deal for an assistant to make.
Moving Davies back to LB for the first time in 2 years is a big call.
Not giving Porro his first start in front of the home fans is another big call with Levy looking on.
He got them all right.
I doubt Stellini made those calls tbh. Nonetheless, it was a fantastic win and Emerson really deserves the plaudits… he was immense.

I know there was a bit of criticism when the team was announced. Mainly that it was too defensive.

But choosing solidity over that team picked last week made sense. Yes, West Ham aren’t great this year, but they still have dangerous players. Outside of Bowen’s attempt in the first minute, we kept them quiet.
Wasnt pretty, but nor was it ugly.
PEH, Skippy, Royal, Romero and Kane were all tuned in today. Davies is a solid choice as a LWB. He won’t let the team down defensively, and it allows Lenglet to push up a bit and try to get crosses into the box.
I like the adjustments by Conte. Credit where due. As I often find him to be far too rigid.

Confirmation bias much? Dier was rock solid, didn’t look remotely troubled all day.
Dier had one moment when he was dragged out vs antonio and forced to defend - he stood off and let antonio get the cross in, just like he did on that leicester goal vs ieanacho.

In this system he is protected in the middle but whenever he gets forced to defend beyond clearances and headers, its suspect.

Props to davies (and hoijberg) for the first goal.

Perisic brings crosses but hes never making the run that Ben did for that first goal, for me thats x10 way more important when trying to break teams down as opposed to peppering the box with hopeful crosses.

Take a bow Mr. Royal, excellent performance, MOTM, followed by Romero and Skipp/PEH who both had good 2nd halves in particular. Good game for Davies too.

Davies may well become first choice LWB until the end of the season. Perisic is a total defensive liability and even his forward play has deteriorated.

Perisic should only play as a forward from now on. Even then, we already have Son and Danjuma there

I think some feel Romero(9) is largely a crunch tackle kinda guy...when he is a world class baller too.

The relaxation he brings to our defence on the ball is wonderful, not a hint of panic, always the right pass out...and wha-hey no card this time (y)

I love that 3 of our most derided players combined to make that sumptious first goal. Great way to stick it to the boo boys.

Close call for Motm but the reincarnation of Cafu gets it again.

Still baffled Sky Sports (Alan Smith) gave MOM to Ben Davies. He was very good, but Emerson and Romero were both exceptional.

Mate if your argument that a CCB had a bad game is that he let one cross into the box happen then you’re just proving my point re confirmation bias. Do you apply the same scrutiny to Romero for instance?

Dier has a really good game yesterday. That doesn’t mean you can’t want him replaced, but credit where it’s due

I never said dier had a bad game, Im saying it should be really difficult to have a bad game in the position he plays against a team struggling as badly as west ham at the moment. Calling him rock solid as if he had a lot to deal with is a bit much imo.

The one time he was called upon to really handle danger in isolation he gave antonio way too much space and time. And it was a repeat of what happened last match where it cost us a goal which is why it resonates all the more.

Doesnt mean he had a bad game, but wouldve been nice to see him assert himself in that situation.

Both Dier and Romero played well yesterday. Both probably had 1 moment where they could have done better. Diers was the cross into the box and Romero where he let Bowen get a shot away. I do feel that a lot of fans are trying to pick out anything that Dier does wrong and jump on it.
