Perišić 2 - No longer has legs for wing back, sess no better, real problem area, would play him in Sons position, where he plays for Croatia
This. Been advocating this. He's 35 and still asked to play wingback. When will Conte ever learn to be less stubborn, drop the poor performers (Son) and play the right people in their strongest positions (Perisic)

I know the last 6 months have seemed like 2 years but he is 33.

MoM Romero - despite early booking looked very assured

8 - Romero. Very competitive and solid
7 - Bentancur. Great to have him back. Easy on the ball and passed forwards
7 - Kane. Looked sharp and continually played in colleagues
7 - Kulu. Everytime he is on the ball he is a threat. Linked well with Kane, Bentancur and Royal
7 - Royal. Looked solid against Grealish and was on hand to take his goal
6 - Dier. Did OK
5 - Davies. Struggled as did the other left sided players
3 - Son. Seems so unsure of his touch and ability and confidence is slipping match by match
2 - PEH. So limited and offered little for the team. Always playing backwards and loses possession under pressure
2 - Lloris. Another shaky display. Poor near post mistake again and distribution terrible. Time to replace
1 - Perisic. I usually like him but missed a sitter and very poor defensively against Mahrez

Subs
Sess - did OK
Richie - No impact
Bissouma - did OK
Lenglet - Terrible. Played himself out of a summer move

5 - Conte. Not much he could do about the individual mistakes, however continues to persist with some players who need to be rested and with a back 3 that doesn't work

A defeat and 4 goals conceded and yet I come out of that one more pro Conte and increasingly convinced that he deserves an entirely new defence (bar Romero) and goalkeeper before we really see his potential as our coach.

Soft goals and errors have plagued us under Poch, mourinho, Nuno and now Conte. Time to examine some of the common denominators Davies, Dier, Lloris Add in poor recruitment at LWB and RWB and you have foundations of sand. The occasional spells where we’ve looked solid fool us into thinking we can get away without upgrading these guys.

Royal for me.

the lad gets so much stick on this site but if everyone put in the effort he does we would be in a much happier place.

But did we attack well? We are blaming our defenders yet the man city goals were of a much higher quality compared to ours. Our goals were gifts.

If take out all mistakes, ifs and buts from both sides, we still lose. Can't take the mistakes from one team only.
Yeah. We pressed well and played well on the counter well in the first half. Tbh if we take out all the egregious mistakes it’s probably 1-1. Man city had better quality goals because they have much higher quality than we do. At the end of the day losing to city is expected (even though we somehow constantly beat them), it’s just frustrating because that first half was actually excellent.

I gave it to Emerson. He was excellent defensively in the first half and did much better than he has done previously when supporting the attack.
He just edges out Bentancur whose presence in midfield we have sorely missed. Romero was imperious at the back, pity the other CBS were not in his class. Kulusevski was always a handful for City’s defense and he did some great defensive work helping Emerson. If we had a least 3 more players like those last 3 we’d have a more than decent team.
Son needs to be dropped. There is no advantage to the team, or him, in continuing to pick him. We need to start with a front 3 of Richarlison, Kane Kulusevski for the next few games.

don’t blame him for sitting on a two goal lead.
The biggest problem this this part of of your statement is that the team we currently have are simply incapable of sitting on any lead or preserving parity when any kind of pressure is applied to the defence or our goalkeeper.

I understandably self medicated at the start of the match, so slight haziness, but 1st half it looked like Conte had sprung a surprise. Suddenly we had 5-6 players in the City half as they started attacks, forcing them into dangerous turnovers...wow, were we actually pressing ? haven't seen that since...forever.

So great stuff first half. 2nd half the gin has largely medicated away..but noticed Bents(7) tiring and Hugo(4) not commanding the area...did he crash into Davies when he failed to reach that cross ? communication issues ?

Also City looked lethally clinical. It seems to be the narrative round here that the 4 goals were all our mistakes. Not sure myself. Sad outcome anyway.

Lloris: 5 – willing to give him the benefit of the doubt with Mahrez’s 1st goal, but so weak for the first. Low on confidence, made the wrong decision.
Emerson: 7 – scored a goal, bust a gut to get forward, and I don't think any of the goals came from his side.
Romero: 7 – thought he looked much better today; it's a shame Haaland got one because otherwise I'd have barely realised he was playing
Dier: 5 – thought he was very weak, with some questionable passing...
Davies: 6 – don't remember him doing much wrong despite being left exposed by Perisic's defending, but as a collective, defence is so low on confidence
Perisic: 4 – awful performance but we know he can't defend (he could put more effort in, though)
PEH: 5 – didn't do anything particularly awful, but nothing particularly well either – definition of his season
Bentancur: 7 – urgh, what a player; we've missed him - will look a lot better as he gets more match fitness
Kulusevski: 7 – such a bright spot in this team – build the team around him. Would give him higher, but...
Son: 5 – :(
Kane: 6 – thought he struggled a little, but his effort for the second goal was him personified this season.

Subs: 5 – I don't think I remember much of an impact from anyone.
Conte: 5 – needs to drop Lloris, needs to drop Son. Needs to make subs quicker when it's clear we're suffering.

the last paragraph, yes we made mistakes but you are right city were clinical. Mahrez was prime Messi

The earlier comment that LB is an even bigger issue than RB is very true. At least Emerson is ok defensively and yesterday he had one of his best games coming forward. Neither Perisic nor Sessegnon can defend and we needed to have either not loaned back Udogie or not cast Off Reguillon who in my opinion was treated too harshly. And with Emerson and Reguillon we had a back 4 option . With Sess and Perisic we don’t.

The biggest takeaway from this performance is Pep's interview.
A disinterested + impassionate Man City was still too much for us, even after gifting us 2 goals.
We are miles away from competing. The gulf is massive so just forget matches against title contenders.

Money in football can't be separated unfortunately. The most successful clubs are the clubs that spend the most money in their respective leagues. Grealish Haarland Marhrez Phillips cost more than the whole of our squad.
