He has been playing extremely well on the left side of a front 3 for barca recently.

Namely the CL tie vs PSG but with the emergence of Yamal he's been regularly on the left the past couple of months.

He’s on €240k p/w and Barca will want premium coin to sell him as they desperately need to raise funds. No swaps or bargain deals. Imo if they sell him it will be for big money to the Saudi league.

Agree with the above comments. Under a different manager I'd be very interested in him, but under Ange I don't think he's what we need right now.

I actually think he would be great in our system. Played a similar one at Leeds previously and excelled. The system at Barca isnt how we would use him.

A player I think we will go for is one that I know you have had your concerns over - Raphinha. He can play left or right, prem proven, excelled in a Leeds team that played a similar style to how we do. If the price is OK and he is put up for sale then I think I'd be happy with him.
I’m gonna reply to you here as I don’t want to derail the Scouting thread.

Completely disregarding any questions I may have over him as a player the problem with Raphinha is that his current contract is €240k p/w and if Barca sell him, which I think they probably will, they would want a premium for him because they know he’s one of their most valuable assets that they can justify selling. My expectations are they will try and flog him to the Saudi’s. Now obviously he might not want to go there but I don’t see us being able to offer him the sort of wages he’d want or pay the price Barca will want. Maybe he becomes an option if they both get really desperate but I’m not even sure Raphinha will want to leave. We’ve seen before Barca trying to sell FDJ without any success so no reason the same might happen to Raphinha. If Xavi stays and continues to play him he is under no obligation to accept a lower contract from us.

Furthermore he will be 29 in the winter of 2025 (his birthday is in December and he’s currently 27) and that is certainly something that should be kept in mind considering how much of his game is based around speed and the money it would take to get him.

I think we will def be monitoring the situation, we certainly have long standing interests. I just see it being a complicated situation that very likely could end up too expensive for us.

Can definitely see him going to Saudi.

Yeah?

I think Saudi links are just the default setting for media folks now because it allows them to splash huge numbers across their headlines. Can't see many players going over there in their prime now, and as I predicted from day one the league was nothing more than a five minute fad. You'll see players going there once their career is done at the top level, and clubs will try and push players there, but any player who is in it for the football won't look at it twice.

I can certainly see the Saudi’s being the only ones willing to pay what Barca want for him and match his contract if not improve on it. Just a question if he wants to go. Ether way Barca will no doubt try and push him there. Could end up being messy if he doesn’t want to go.

Flipping it then, I wonder if a spate of players will now look to return to European football this summer or at least have their agents tout them around but undoubtedly the biggest hurdle is going to be obtaining them on semi palatable wages or heavily subsidised by the parent club.

I think anyone leaving the Saudi league to come back to Europe will know that their wages will take a massive dent. The only reason they went to Saudi was the money, if that money had existed in Europe they never would have gone.

Coupled with the fact clubs outside of Saudi are not going to pay the vastly inflated transfer fees that were used to entice clubs to sell in the first place.
I can see most players who are looking to move back to playing proper football in Europe will end up going on loan with a large proportion of the wages subsidised as well.

I know we joke about people rounding up players who are 28 to say they are almost 29, but this is getting silly now ;)

I think the Saudi clubs will cut losses in order to ensure players get out happily. The worst thing they could do right now is create prohibitive reasons for why players can't leave, effectively forcing players to stay against their will. It will put an enormous nail in the coffin of the sports washing that the country is doing, not just with football but with other sports.

I imagine Saudi clubs will let players go on very cheap deals and players will then have to decide if they want to move to Europe for less wages or stay in Saudi for better wages. I imagine the majority that want to leave will leave and be happy that they at least got a season or two of the gravy train in Saudi.

Whether Raphina would want to move to Saudi or not remains to be seen. If he does then we have no chance, but if he doesn't and Barca want rid of him then we're amongst one of a small handful of clubs that could feasibly make a move.

I wonder if there's a double deal for him and Roque that enables Barca to come off ok on their books and yet allows us to balance financials on our end.

Probably not, but I would be happy with Raphina joining and delighted with Roque.

Would love Raphina up to Ange to convince him! Oh and a little thing called paying the money.
