For 23 years I have been a Spurs fan, through mediocrity, mediocrity, mediocrity and now finally awesomeness I have supported Spurs. I live in New Zealand, for the majority of my time when ever people have asked me who I supported and I would say Spurs and then they would laugh at me. For the most part the football fans in New Zealand are made up of a ton of United fans, tons of Liverpool fans, lots of Arsenal fans and quite a lot of Chelsea fans, then what's left is spread through out the remaining teams. I could live with that, I've never liked bandwagon fans.
Then Ryan Nelsen signs for Spurs.
New Zealand Captain Ryan Nelsen.
New Zealand Football Legend and leading Icon Ryan Nelsen.
Already people are posting on Facebook how they are now going to buy a Spurs shirt. Its the biggest football news to happen in this country since Nelsen lead the All Whites to an unbeaten run in the 2010 World Cup. He is our David Beckham.
And I hate that this has happened. Ryan Nelsen is a brilliant player who makes everyone around him play better. He is a born leader. But I hate hate hate the fact that there will now be a lot of people in New Zealand who will now buy a Spurs shirt, tell people their favourite team is Spurs and not know the names of any other player other than Ryan Nelsen. No idea who Modric, Bale or Mauricio Tarricco is they only know of Nelsen.
I feel as though I am one of those people who doesn't like a band now that they have become popular.
I don't know whether it is wrong to feel this way but I just feel so gutted that we signed a player who I have always thought was awesome. It just doesn't seem fair that I'm now going to be surrounded by a bunch of so called Spurs bandwagon fans going on how much they love Spurs for as long as Nelsen plays for us.
Maybe I'm a **** for thinking this way but fuck, I'm just pissed off.
