I never wanted him to leave, very much felt like he was as good as we were going to get. And as above, turns out he would've been the perfect player for Conte...

The main thing that irked me though was this idea of paying off his contract and just letting him go for nothing - he cost £25m and was a pretty good player - why did we cost ourselves so much money just to get rid of him?

Because Emerson is such a fantastic player we simply had to make room :cautious:

The problem is the complete lack of direction at the top of the club. How are you ever meant to have any even medium-term planning when you lurch from from Poch to Jose to Nuno to Conte in a matter of a couple years? The same fate befell GLC in particular. There's no vision for what we're meant to be, so it's impossible to mould a squad that matches the vision of whoever the current caretaker in the hotseat is.

Really it should be give Conte what he wants. Let say in hindsight he leaves in 2 seasons, you have a blueprint for a successful 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 team.

Next manager has to be someone familiar with this so Inzaghi, Nagelsmann, Tuchel or an up and coming lie Potter or Steve Cooper.

I'm not going to revise my opinion of him. He could have a streak of games where he was great, but you always knew there was that rash challenge or lapse in concentration in him. He's doing well and that's great for him, but he let us down on more than one occasion and never seemed to learn from his mistakes.

Yup, He wasn’t good enough, but i think Athletic wrote about how the players hated Jose number 2

Not sure how he's got on at Villarreal but he would actually be good under Conte imo. Technically a really underrated player and might suit RWB a lot better.

I’d rather have Trippier, Walker-Peters or Walker.
True but none of those are available.

Anyway hopefully it's Spence in for Emerson so the point is moot. I just think we made a mistake with Aurier last summer when we didn't have a better replacement lined up.

I would rather have him than Emerson tbf.
Not sure he is level we want. He may have more attackin instinct, but his crossing was a regular disappointment under Mourinho and the way we set up then had him in advanced positions a lot, with Davies more defensive.

Wish him best of luck, but going back to Aurier is not the answer.

Aurier is no better if not worse than Emerson, at least Emerson isn’t a defensive liability like Aurier. Neither are particularly good going forward. Aurier has his moments but he’s more likely to hoof the ball into orbit especially when we’ve multiple players unmarked in the box.

Technically an underrated player?? Is this the same player which was unable to master the technique of taking a throw in away at Palace a few season back? Not once, not twice but three times
