From the OS
Brad Friedel's 14 clean sheets in the Premier League last season represents a 25-year best in league action.
The goalkeeper took the tally to 14 in the last match of the campaign with a number of fine saves to deny Fulham and secure a 2-0 win at the Lane.
We've had a number of seasons with 13 clean sheets in recent years - including 2004-05, 2005-06, 2008-09 and 2009-10 - but Brad's 14 was last bettered in 1986-87, when Ray Clemence kept 19 clean sheets in league action.
That was the season where the team flourished under David Pleat's new playing system of 4-5-1 with Clive Allen grabbing 49 goals.
We finished third in the old Division One, lost in the final of the FA Cup and reached the semi-finals of the League Cup.
Looking back through our history to when we first played in the Football League in 1908-09, 14 clean sheets has only been bettered on nine occasions, including 16 in that first campaign in the old Division Two in 1908-09.
The record is 21 clean sheets in 1970-71 with the great Pat Jennings in goal.

25 years ago keeper had more games with which to keep clean sheets and didn't have to stop a ball that flys around like crazy

Well done to Brad and the defence.

I really hope we get a keeper who can learn from Brad next year and compete, as good as the record Brad has of consecutive games I don't want that to play on Harrys mind, whichever keeper is training well should be playing.

He has been one of our best players this season, good to see a keeper who does not throw the ball into his own net.

Roger Bennett on this week's Men In Blazers podcast (highly recommend it, btw) talking about Friedel's "accent":

"At first he sounds like he's from Birmingham. They come back from break and he's from Johannesburg. They come back again and he's from Perth."

Totally agree

I've said many times that Gomes is a world class shot stopper, but Friedal is a better all round goal keeper who gives his defense confidence

Club record, meh. We've been shit for a long time and even since our Fortunes have changed, we've had two keepers who were prone to the odd fuck up

I'm in pain atm because of Saturday, I wanna read transfers on the OS and not this shit

But yeah well done Brad

As said in the ITK thread it should be 13 because Lennon could of been in goal against Blackburn and it wouldn't of made any difference

Aim for 16 or 17 next season.

The aim should be 2 or 3 more a season. If we can get it up to 22 or 23 (eventually) we'll be doing exceptionally well.

And people say we Friedel should be replaced? He was brilliant this season! He made 1 mistake which was half Gallas' fault vs Swansea

Was that John Naylor berating Barry Daines with Steve Perryman ?

Barry must have become the fattest goalkeeper ever to play for Spurs .

If he could have waddled over to Taraabt's free kick or the Villa shot from 50 yards we'd be in the CL now.

He didn't make any humiliating howling gashes, but he let in at least 10 goals Gomes would have saved, and stood rooted to his line for the whole season. He wasn't inspiring confidence in defenders when players like Kaboul and Walker were blocking him for being slow to come and deal with stuff.

He's just a Robinson who eats apple pie. Too much of it IMO.

"He inspires confidence in the defence". It's one of these peculiar expressions that people like to use, isn't it, BC? It cannot be questioned. Just put it in your pipe and smoke it.

Not everyone is blessed with a keeper who's in his forties and does yoga. And he hasn't missed a league game in seven years. These are the things we need to focus on.

Please name those 10 goals BC.

But I guess it cancels out the 10 regulation catches he made when the ball was coming to him that Gomes would have shoe-horned into his own net.

Swings and roundabouts.

Kinda like saying 'Friedel let in 10 goals Gomes would have saved' or 'If Gomes had been in goal they'd never have scored those headed goals because he'd have dealt with the cross', huh?

I wouldn't have said that. I think it's the best piece of analysis I've ever heard in relation to a goalkeeper's performances. There's no need to put flesh on the bones. Yoga.
