We must have one of the most cheaply acquired first 11 in the top of the PL

Our current 4 best performing players - Lloris, Eriksen, Kane and Chadli - were all bought for very reasonable (or zero) fees. Add to that our other homegrown or very cheap acquisitions who are first choice or nearly - Benteleb, Mason, Rose, Townsend - and our first choice 11 must be one of the cheapest acquired in the top half of the PL. Even Walker was quite cheap (9M for Walker + Naughton - who we just sold for 5M!)

Kane's great form has somewhat over-shadowed how great Chadli has been this season. If you consider that Chadli was the very cheapest of the -err- "Magnificent Seven" (costing 1/4 of what Lamela cost, even 2/5 of Paulinho), that was a truly great buy. And of course Kane was free. Even Eriksen was one of the cheaper buys of the splurge.

So perhaps Levy was right all along in not shoveling out huge fees for players with big reputations.

Lloris 11.8 M
Walker 9M - 5M
Fazio 8M
Verts 9M
Rose 1M
Bentaleb 0
Mason 0
Townsend 0
Eriksen 11M
Chadli 7M
Kane 0

51.8 M

The total cost of our first choice midfield and attack is 18M!

Hugo was £8m I think, Walker was the cheaper end of that deal so about £4m and Vertonghen was £8m.

So £47m.

Probably one of the most expensive benches if Lamella, Soldado, Paulinho, Capoue, Kaboul, Dembele, Chiriches are keeping it warm.

& probably one of the most expensive benches :/

Our 4 most expensive players were Lamela (30M), Soldado (26M), Paulinho (17M), and Dembele (15M) :wtf: If it weren't for our cheap or free acquisitions shining, our transfer policy might look as laughable as, say, Liverpool's.

i think lamela's ahead of townsend though so that bumps it up 26m.

I think Rose/Davies and Lamela/Townsend are both 50/50 calls at the moment (also Stambouli for a MF spot). Forgetting about fees and histories, I think I would pick Townsend on current form.

So bench:

Lamela (30M)
Soldado (26M)
Paulinho (17M)
Dembele (15M)
Vorm (5M)
Chiriches (8M)
Kaboul (4)

105M

Our bench is twice our starting lineup using those eg's (albeit discussion to be had on lineups/ subs)

It's strange really, considering how much money is in play, that the clubs, with all of the resources they have at their disposal, can't do any better predicting how good players will be; you'd think they'd have a very precise system in place by now. (I think that, for baseball in the US, which is full of stats, they can be quite accurate in predicting player's evolutions).

Southampton have done ok with such a system, that analyses potential replacement players with out going. He'll they even did it with the manger acquisition .

I think there are many aspects to consider in European football. Language barriers and the ability to adapt to cultural differences are huge issues, and there are many differences in level and playing style in various countries.

Such issues make it much more difficult to predict the outcome.

Kaboul cost nearer £9.5m - we just knocked some debt off to a proportion of the value

Although technically we lost more than £2m the first time we flogged him to Pompey, so could argue he's cost nearer £12m!

Yes

The money spent on

Soldado
Paulinho
Chiriches
Lamela (for now - but here's hoping he improves)

Is pretty criminal and has set us back a lot in terms of what we can do in the transfer market

On the plus side though it has given opportunities to some of our youngsters who have taken their chance very well - an opportunity they likely would never have got has we spent that money more wisely

Kane, Mason, Bentaleb - even Townsend to an extent have all benefited from our terrible transfer activity in the Bale window and the likes of Pritchard, Winks and Onomah etc may do too in the near future

Silver linings

Always said I'm not a huge believer that you have to spend big money to improve. I think its a cop out for lazy scouting teams and for the many, many tactical dumbasses that parade as managers these days.
