Look no further than the two halves of football played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday to see that the question of Christian Eriksen’s value to Spurs has become even more complicated to calculate.

Can't get to all the article without a Times Subcription
You haven't missed much. The narrative is simnply that Spurs were destined to lose the match until that magical moment when CE appeared, and that Spurs would be mad to sell him before they've and secured an adequate replacement. (The writer, Gary Jacob, admitted in the comments that the Times wouldn't publish a straight match report for a Saturday fixture in their Monday paper, so he had to emphasise another aspect of the game - hence the Eriksen angle.)

Eriksen made a massive difference on Saturday, lots of effort but very little result in the first half, he made every player in the side look better.

Just offer him a new contract and pay him what he wants. We need him in the team that was proved when he came on in the second half against Aston Villa.

He wants to go to Madrid by all accounts. We can't just pay him what he wants.

We're in a tough spot with him and he might just fancy a free transfer and there's nowt we can do about it. I think he knows he's in the box seat, it's not just about salary, and his salary will be massive regardless of the outcome.

My hope is he'll accept our new offer, maybe with a buyout clause that isn't crazy but targeted, and he recommits to winning things with us with a little extra motivation that he wasn't buried under an avalanche of offers from his preferred clubs.

i'd say 'Christian Eriksen faces big call over Tottenham' is more to the point. After all, he holds all the aces, and although he allegedly wants to go, we can't sell to somewhere he won't go. In the meantime, we have to convince him this is the place to be.

As much as I think Eriksen is a great player, how much of the performance change was actually down to the formation change? We just don't play well in a diamond even with Eriksen as proven last season

Agree totally.. formation change and introduction of a proper attacking midfielder turned it for me. Everyone seemed to know their place and role. Maybe Lo Celso could fill the Eriksen gap if Eriksen wants to leave. Main thing though is that he signs a contract or spurs get some money.

He did make a difference on Sat, but he's been missing in big for a season or so & I think the only decision to be made is whether to let him see out his contract & let him go on a free or whether to sell him to the highest bidder in this TW.

I think he's made it clear he wants to leave & he's not prepared to sign another contract, leastways until he's sure none of the clubs he thinks he should be playing for are interested in buying him.

Once the European TW closes i think we will have a better idea of what his plans are, before the summer i think he said he could still sign a new contract with us but wanted to move to one of the big two in Spain, so if he is still here by September, i think that will be when we get more news about him and a new contract.

As has already been said it was the change in formation that was the game changer and what has been said before is that Eriksen was not involved in any of our goals so his performance has been overstated. none the less he played well when he came on.
