A real shame we didn't get Fernandes and Ighalo. Have helped to transform United and would have been exactly what we needed.

I'm enjoying this 'sell Kane for more quality players" across the board suggestion.

Has anyone been paying attention to our previous centre forward signings?

Soldado
Adebayor
Janssen
Llorente

None have even come half as close as to being as important as Kane has for us.

How about we keep Kane and use the money to buy players like Bergwijn, who don't cost the earth but can become big players.
Really don't think anybody wants to sell Kane. More trying to consider how we might put what would undoubtedly be an enormous fee to use in terms of fleshing out the squad as a whole if it came to pass that he decided to leave the club. But you're absolutely right to question our track record of signings.

The total package for Fernandes is circa £70m in fees plus his rumoured £150k per week wages puts it at circa £105m, whereas Ighalo has publicly stated he only wanted to go to Man U.

Just a little something I remember from the 50's when I hear of players we should have signed like Fernandes who went to Man Utd for example. Apart from the transfer price like it or not when a club who in football terms are bigger than us i.e trophies won etc then if we are competing with the likes of Liverpool etc for a player , the bigger team is normally going to get the player.

Back in the 50's we were after Mel Charles but so were Arsenal , like it or not Arsenal were the bigger name with more titles so Mel chose Arsenal and not Spurs or Chelsea but there was a silver lining to the story we went and signed Dave Mackay instead. Wages didn't come into it as those were the days of max. £20 a week.
Here is the wiki entry about the saga.

"Chased by Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, Charles was eventually sold to Arsenal in March 1959 for a fee of £42,750 with two other players, David Dodson and Peter Davies, going the other way. This was at the time the highest ever transfer between two British clubs as Juventus had paid Leeds United £65,000 for John Charles in 1957. Aiming to use him as a centre forward, Arsenal manager George Swindin and captain Tommy Docherty managed to persuade Charles to take the move, and as Charles was convinced by the Arsenal men, Tottenham decided to withdraw their offer. Spurs manager Bill Nicholson was forced to sign Dave Mackay instead, as the White Hart Lane club would become a major force in the game in the 1960s. Due to this success, in his autobiography, Charles wrote that "signing for Arsenal was the most terrible choice I ever made". Though he also wrote that "I'll always have a place in my heart for Arsenal, and it was an honour to have played for them."

Rumours flying around that we’re interested in bringing Kondogbia in. Would be a great signing from the little I’ve seen of him. Just off to look at YouTube highlights to confirm my limited opinion of him.

Ive seen him linked by multiple people today too, and yes, he would be a good signing. We should have got him three years ago ‘there’s no one who can improve our squad’ was a load of rubbish. He’s 27 now, and we haven’t had much luck with DM’s in the upper ends of their 20’s.. He would go straight in to the team, we should get him and a younger version who is able to step in when needed..

Think of the players we could have had if we’d have pulled off the negotiations:
Kondogbia
Grealish
Dybala
Coutinho.

Right back and GK are the difficult ones.

We can of course strengthen in these positions in theory. But if we don't get CL in the end, then who's going to be available, good enough and willing to come to us? I don't think there are any obvious choices just yet.

With Aarons a lot of clubs will be interested, and i'm still yet to be convinced by him for a big fee. I don't see any other obvious options apart from those at top clubs who would be reluctant to move.

Goalkeeper also tricky for similar reasons. Doesn't seem to be too many obvious choices to replace Lloris.

At GK, if there's no decent offers for him i'd probably stick with Lloris for next season. He's definitely not world class anymore but I don't see an obvious upgrade that's available. It might be an option to try to bring in a younger keeper to replace Gazzaniga and challenge him with the hope we strike lucky.

At RB, I feel like we may have to look at bringing in an experienced loan for the season. Keeps our powder dry for other positions (CB, DM, ST, LB) where there are more obvious upgrades available. Hopefully there's somebody available who needs game time for an inevitable Euro 21.

I'd bring in Giroud no matter what happens with Kane. He will cost nothing allowing us to plough money into other positions and would be as good a backup as we can get. After Giroud we should turn our attention to DM and CB then after that it should be case of see what we can do.

a functional scouting department can find these guys.

Simple solution to scouting just follow the Dortmund scouts around and see who they are looking at , when it comes to money the Dortmund hierarchy are tighter than Daniel they won't spend more than £28 million on a player so we just outbid them. :)

Certainly hope that’s one we’re looking at. Also the LB from Brentford Rico Henry.

Really good young English players that won’t cost ridiculous fees.

a functional scouting department can find these guys.

We had ITK that Rico Henry was under consideration before he moved to Brentford (2016).

Now the question is, what was the plan for him? We had peak Rose and Davies. Develop him in house/loan out?
Why didn't we do this with him and others (Gray, Lookman)?

Some could have become assets to trade, squad members or more. WindyCOYS mentioned this in latest Extra Inch pod and I agree.
