aside from missing the point by a mile, the timing ...

If you add in that earlier in the day he had posted something that said something like "we have to be the change"....and then that video hits.

Compare it to Kirk Cousins who's post (almost at the beginning of it all) was...
My heart breaks for our city, but especially for my African American brothers and sisters, who I know feel this on a level I can’t possibly understand, Please know I am with you. WE must do better. WE must be better. May God pour out His mercy and grace such that we are better

Posting a black image with a generic sentence as a sign of solidarity is complete bullshit IMO, people aren't stupid, they can see through the empty statements.

Sometimes it's better to just shut the fuck up as Malcolm Jenkins said.

Eventually your true feelings will be revealed.

Drew Brees getting a ton of shit, rightfully so...

It was obviously a pretty clumsy and ignorant thing to say, but I think people are overreacting a bit to be honest. He's essentially just explained that he doesn't think that it's the right form of protest, and given his reasons for it. That's an opinion he's perfectly entitled to. I dont agree with him but I don't think he's said anything that horrible either. People are acting like he's actively supporting racism or something which is nothing like what he said.

On the other hand of he'd changed his profile picture to some generic "deep" quote he saw on Facebook, which takes no effort or thought whatsoever, people would be saying what a hero he was for standing by his teammates.

The way to tackle racism isn't by jumping down the throat of anyone who doesn't join in with this very specific protest. For all we know he might do a lot of work to help the cause behind the scenes so just because he doesn't feel comfortable with this one thing is no reason to turn him into some kind of enemy of the civil rights movement.

Amazing how quickly everyone in Louisiana seems to have forgotten the good work Brees did helping New Orleans and Louisiana after Katrina and during this pandemic. His foundation rebuilt schools, parks and playgrounds but also sponsors mentoring programs for the mentally disabled, child care facilities and revitalisation projects for poor neighbourhoods. He even donated $5m to the state to help it during Covid. Hell, unlike most of the Saints roster Brees actually lives in New Orleans and not out in the richer, whiter suburbs.

To all the Saints fans/NOLA residents chanting 'fuck Drew Brees' simply because he has a different opinion be careful what you wish for. You might end up with a QB who thinks 'fuck the locals, I'll keep my millions in my bank account'.

so what? he may be a great guy but his thinking on this is fucked up and he's right to be called on it especially right now.

His opinion is wrong but the idea he should be ostracized for sharing an opinion that runs counter to most views is also wrong. "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" seems to have morphed into 'I disapprove of what you say, so I'm going to cancel you'. This cancel culture is largely nothing more than censorship intended to humiliate.

I think the response you saw was disappointment, presumably because he is so respected

Roger Goddell has come out in support of black athletes but he isn't the problem, the problem is owners like Jerry Jones

thats one way to look at it, but Kap was bad for business 3 years ago. At that time 50% of Americans supported him but the percentage of NFL fans was much lower. The NFL, more than any other major league in the US, is selling a line of bullshit that includes patriotism and militarism, and some sport I guess. I dont think Gooddell has grown a conscious - I think he senses a business opportunity.

It turns out the NFL's own media team went against them, teamed up with some players and backed the NFL into a corner.

I agree about Jerry Jones though, he threatened to bench any player that kneeled during the anthem, let him try that now.

After a bunch of players got together and released that video of each of them taling turns reading a great statement, the league had no choice.

The World has gone mad. It's a fucking disgrace. Nike should also be ashamed of themselves as well, trying to act like that to get popularity. There's so many black players and supporters of that team who hadn't even thought about it until it was made a big deal.
Native Americans have been saying for years that it's racist and have been trying to get it changed. If they think it's racist then maybe we should listen to them.
