Lamela (+ Lo Celso), Sánchez, Walker-Peters, Davies (+ Sessegnon). The options are there, they're just not being used.

See above - we've already started operating differently now that we actually have the tools to do so.

When these 3 plays everyone criticizes poch selection. If you do you are damned if you don't you are damned.

Regarding 2nd point. Only one window after missing for two TWs and that too one is on loan and will affect next window budget.
When this happens every summer then you can say we operates differently now.

I’d snap your hand off for top 4 this season. I’m just not convinced there will be any real progress from this mooted complete rebuild unless we’re prepared to spend big money in the next 2 transfer window. Bearing in mind we are not going to get a bean for Toby, Jan and Eriksen.
With the exception of Liverpool and city the 3rd and 4th spot are still well within our abilities, I think we are jumping the gun slightly in the Poch our views, we need to factor the current downward levels into a longer term view, it’s frustrating definitely but we need to stabilise and I think Poch can do this and I still think we have a decent squad capable of top 4

"No club maintains a relentless upward trajectory" We have been on a downward trajectory for something over a year now - this trend isn't going to stop anytime soon with Poch.

"Stick with Poch and keep him at all costs, he will get us moving forward again soon." This sound more like blind faith than optimism - either way, it's flawed.

Right now he is delivering a shower of shit that he can't even comprehend and you honestly think that he got us to the final of the CL? Luck and ridiculous opportune moments got us there and big doses of it too. Poch was merely a passenger at those pivotal moments. We were soundly beaten by Ajax at our ground in the first leg and by the grace of Moura we sneaked in at the very last. Poch can't take that much credit for getting to the CL final!

First time ever this club has got to the CL final and the manager had nothing to do with it? What utter tripe!

Ajax were better in the first half of both matches - go back and watch. Poch is a passenger in pivotal moments you say? Bringing on Llorente at HT in 2nd match was being a passenger in your world I guess?

Go with whatever works for you but don't diss the man that has done so much for this club over the last few years, more than any other manager for decades. He has been let down by the board and we are now paying the price for it. It was up to Levy & co to keep him on his toes and happy and they have failed big time.

No doubt we’re still capable of top 4, but I’d still take it right now because if we can’t stop conceding goals at the rate we are then we’re in serious danger of missing out.

I think most Newcastle managers have had that schtick, but a good manager plays to the style of his players. If they can't play good football, making them doesn't yield success.

Brighton sacked him for the same reasons that have ended up with teams like Stoke and Sunderland sliding into oblivion - expecting beautiful and secure football from championship-level teams. I think he did well, personally.

He's managed a few games for us in the past and I certainly think that he knows enough about the DNA of the club to potentially do well, however he is in my "better than the next flavour of the month" list that comes after established winners.
Sorry, he’s shown nothing in his career other than being able to organise a team in a 451 get men behind the ball and try to exploit set pieces.

How? How exactly is that you see the stabilising can be done within the present set up? What are the thoughts and suggestions in support of that?
My views are simple and based on what Poch has achieved over 5 seasons with a good squad but one that has overachieved and that’s down to the management of those players, this is a bump in the road, yes it could be more and could be terminal but I think Poch deserves more time to correct any issues, the season is a couple months in and at the beginning of the season positivity was all around the club. Poch has a great record with us over many seasons and for this reason I still think he can turn this around. Finally the infighting and issues and dramas in the dressing room we can’t really have an informed view on due to rumours and ITK, the performances have been substandard and last nights was wholly unacceptable but let’s not jump overboard yet

Did I miss the rumours about Poch losing the backing of the team?

Or have they only materialised since last nights game?
Consider the empty blather of the transfer windows, lasting weeks and then months, in which hardly any one of the rumoured moves, player-signings, supposed departures, etc., ever amount to anything. People following it hour by hour, day by day, week after week, must eventually go mad trying to fathom what on earth is going on or might happen. Football writing and football reporting is thick with rumours with very little substance. Look at the denial Chris Eriksen has had to issue today. And Pochettino likewise. 'Lost the backing of the team' is one of those sweeping generalisations that makes an assertion but offers next to no hard fact.

If you've seen the butt of Jan Vertonghen's lady, you'd know that there is no way he'd cheat on her.
You never know. Look at Hugh Grant. While Liz Hurley might not be the most stunning woman on the planet she is certainly a HUGE step up on the crack ho he got caught with. The only possible advantage she may have had over Liz was lack of teeth but the rest???

We've leaked goals for about a year now. The CB pairing and the CM partnership have ran their course and then some. Split the CB's and drop the CM's and I think our spine wouldnt look so weak. Come next summer, we can replace them.

It’s not the drop of the hat though
The point is once you give in and get rid of our best manager in 40 years because a few malcontents have the hump, then they will keep doing it to the next manager, and the next. A lot of players are going next summer anyway. Choose the manager, the players will know who’s in charge and he’ll feel more indebted to Levy for backing him.

Well if you base your assumptions on the idea that we have over achieved I guess that's the foundation for why we differ. Whilst I fully think that several CL campaigns in a row is a big achievement, I very much doubt that it has in fact been literally an over achievement to get there in each of those seasons. The quality of the squad in the past combined with results in clubs that would/should compete for top 4 leads me to assume that this idea of over achievement is fiction.

Oh come on - we were 3 down on agg at halftime and Poch threw the dice, he had to, but that was more in hope than being astute - we were lucky and so was Poch.

If you actually took a moment to go back over the past 5 years and realise, you would see just how far we have fallen and it has been Poch's inability to be flexible with-in systems and styles of football that has done it. I will agree that I think the board could have done more, but with spiralling stadium costs and other projects, it is clear they have had a balancing act. Poch has just sulked his way through the past year or so.

Poch hasn't done any more with this club than I expected, barring a lucky CL final. If I am totally honest, and this might be painful for all the Poch lovers out there, there are more than enough managers that could have come in and done a better job with the squad we have. Take that for what it is.

I do not think we over achieved last season at all. We did get a little lucky against City in CL but we totally deserved the other results and if anything we under achieved since I think we should have been able to beat Liverpool in the final. It just came down to depth imo and our failure to sign players left our team tired out by the end.

This season we signed 2 players we want to become first team regulars but we signed them very late in the window so there was less time to help them adjust and get them training with the squad. It is going to take some time and even then we are pretty short on depth. That is another reason why other clubs sign early rather than risk not getting them in favor of getting a better deal.

Had we bought the players he wanted rather than wasting one window buying none and only getting 2 of his wishlist and not in urgent positions, he probably would have won the league or at least would have seriously challenged. Most other managers that could have got the same results also have the backing of the board and money to spend. Doubt many could have done as well with a squad that has little to no depth while the director sends a clear message that he doesn't want to win things by refusing to spend. The new stadium was bought because it will make a profit.

So many posts about our transfer activity over the last few years re-write history. Ndombélé had a whole pre-season with us. We could have spent more on Lo Celso and got him earlier but that wouldn't have made him any less on holiday after the Copa America. Similarly, Sessegnon wouldn't have stopped being injured.

Short on depth?! There is one squad in the league that is objectively deeper than ours, and it's cost about eleventy billion pounds to assemble.

I figured last night, if he wasn’t sacked by this afternoon then he won’t be, until at least the end of the month. And if that is the case, then he owes Daniel a drink for giving him a few more weeks to see if it can be turned around. But sadly, it sorta feels like a stay of execution. Something sadly inevitable about how this will end.

Hence, why I thought Levy might just rip off the band aid today, rather than dragging it out. Whether you love, hate or are indifferent to Poch, it’s apparent that he has lost the all important connection to the players.

In terms of points finishes, take out the one anomaly where we achieved 86 points and Poch's end-of-season points totals aren't much better than AVB's or Harry's.

Our league finishes, while certainly a progression, are in line with the trajectory we were on anyway and have now declined for three successive years.

Poch's win percentage is fractionally lower than AVB's, and only a few percentage points higher than Redknapp or Sherwood.

And Poch has been blessed with a far, far superior squad to Harry, AVB or Sherwood.

Pochettino is not the saviour you all think he is. He's a charlatan who's run out of excuse cards to play.

Shocking post. Poch’s time might well be up but to belittle what he has done for this club as you have done here is just utterly infuriating.

Well, quite. But the sentiment seems to be that the 4 players you mentioned are performing poorly because they can't be bothered. At least those 3 will put a shift in even if they perform poorly.

Thinking about it, operating in exactly the same way we always used to will see transfer windows like the one just gone become the norm. For years before the stadium project got going properly the club either made a small profit or a small loss i.e. all the money that was made was spent. This was at a time when turnover was about half what it is now. Returning to that model would see a significant upswing in the amount of money spent on fees and wages (which, as I say, has already started).
