True, though I recall a few times he made the runs and Sterling or Barkley rarely looked to use the runs of the wing backs. Hard to criticise Sterling when he can single handedly destroy teams, but he can be selfish.
Yeah, agree on Sterling, that when you're that precocious a talent, you've earned the right to be a little selfish.
Chilwell annoyed me in that I don't recall him really taking his man on and heading for the byline. He'd get faced up, then just stop and pass backwards.
Rose, for all his lack of final ball, will at least create panic and space by trying to thrust towards the box.

The Euros is virtually going to be a home tournament for us if we keep progressing. Whether we can win it with this team, who knows. At the moment we are not good enough in a one off game against France or Belgium.
The midfield is just not good enough, never mind the defence.
Barkley has been given a fair run but doesn’t really look the part. Does have a tendency to give the ball away in his own half. Has always done this and doesn’t seem to be improving. We may be better using Winks and rice as a Shield for the defence. We would get taken apart by the likes of Mbappe and De Bruyne at the moment.
Block off the middle and use the front three and the full backs in attack much like Liverpool do.

Just to pull this bit out, but the former is proven not to be so by the latter. He's young and has promise but he has a long way to go.
No, it’s not “proven” to not be true when overall, he showed plenty of intelligence, not just with his movement, runs and positioning, but also with his general interplay and distribution despite those couple of poor choices. 19 yo, he'll develop and improve that part of his game, especially considering he already has some impressive assist stats in his young career.

At a guess I'd say it's because the smaller footballing countries don't have the system in place yet. It would be even worse if you had it in some qualifying games and not others.

Henderson is the captain of the team who finished second in the Premier league and who lifted the Champions League. I'm not his biggest fan, but he's proven at the highest level so I don't think he's the issue. Rice I'm really not convinced by at this level yet and Barkley is too inconsistent. I was really surprised that Winks didn't get a chance last night. We needed to calm the game down in the second half - I'm not sure why he wasn't given a chance.

I think a few players blew their chance last night. I think Walker, Dele, Stones and Dier walk back into that team if they're fit next month. Sancho took his chance though - he deserves to start the next game.

I can live with Henderson, but as part of that central trio I felt he ended up being bypassed for a lot of the game.
It felt like it was either Rice going sideways or Barkley dropping off/running blindly at the back four.

For me, Winks is the best English player at getting the ball from the defensive third through the middle.
Then I'd rather someone like Foden/Mount centrally pulling the strings and Maddison/Alli playing just behind Kane in a freeish role.

But with an average age of bugger all I can understand Southgate not going down that path (at least yet).
In which case bin off Foden/Mount for Henderson or bin off Maddison/Alli for him and play Foden/Mount further forward.

I've just never thought Barkley shows enough intelligence/end product in that role, and Rice is just another Dier.
We're never going to go forward with those two so we might as well explore the alternatives now.

I can see that Henderson and Rice might be a decent pairing against a stronger team, but it seems unnecessary in the qualifiers. Maybe Southgate wants them to have playing time together so they have an understanding when we do come up against the better teams. I guess we can't really complain when we're scoring so many goals. This could be a big season for Barkley as he should have a chance to claim a regular starting spot at Chelsea due to the transfer ban. If he has a good season he could be a decent option.

Barkley who is already being outshone by the five years younger Mason Mount at club level, who would occupy the same space for England?

I just don't see it. Mount or Maddison (or a fit Dele) are the players who should be in that spot.

I'd be surprised if he's still in the team at the start of the Euros. It's great that we finally have decent competition for places.

For me this season is the last chance he's got to prove that he isn't just another overhyped flop. I know the season is still young, but he's not shown any sign of doing that so far. I'd be surprised if he's starting for Chelsea or England next season.

Barkleys problem is he never kicked on at the vital period for a player. Too many injuries. He’s not the answer.
I think Oxlade-Chamberlain might be a better bet...if he can stay fit of course

I agree. Lampard isn't picking him now so it's not looking good for him.
